Anyone get migraines from eating/drinking kefir or other fermented foods?

Anonymous
I was so excited to add kefir to my diet but started getting severe migraines. I Googled it and it is indeed a common side effect. Is this temporary until my body becomes accustomed to it? I don't want to give up so soon. Has anyone had the same experience?

IME, migraine triggers are not temporary. If something triggers a migraine, it triggers a migraine. My triggers are the same as they were fifteen years ago.

That is not a migraine. That is food allergy and stop eating that.

I didn't get migraines but started getting severe yeast infections. So weird bc I thought kefir was supposed to do the opposite (never had them before).

I can't eat anything fermented or aged

Are you making homemade kefir or buying storebought? Is it whole milk, no added sugar kefir?

I can't drink kombucha at all because my throat burns like crazy and I get a tight-chested feeling -- hard to explain but it's consistent, so I stopped drinking kombucha.

Kefir is great but there are other ways to get probiotics. You might try different kinds of kefir but if it all consistently triggers migraines it is not for you.

Kefir will cause migraines at first for some because your body has too much bad bacteria, but it should subside, it's not the same as "the usual" triggers. Eating too much kefir without eating prebiotic foods such as cultured vegetables will cause yeast infections because of the imbalance when you're not feeding your good bacteria.

I love kefir but get a headache almost immediately after drinking it. I’m lactose intolerant but I read it might be that it’s too high in histamine, something I am also intolerant to: so very reluctantly I have to avoid it. (sometimes I drink some and put up with the headache!)

High histamine foods are a known migraine trigger. (Though not every person with migraines has an identifiable trigger.) Foods that are aged and/or fermented have higher histamine. A lot of foods we consider healthy and good for gut bacteria are higher in histamine.

You do not have to have an allergy to react to a high histamine food. In fact, fish poisoning, while potentially serious, is a reaction to histamine.

Any fermented food gives my dad migraines. Doesn’t bother me at all and I am a migraine sufferer. My triggers are hormones and stress release.

It's possible but I don't think it's my trigger. I think genetics are my trigger. But, for you it could be.

Could be the histamine content. It's a harmless protein found in many aged and fermented foods that can trigger discomfort in sensitive people.
