Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
It’s overreach. The government doesn’t have the right to tell you which school you can attend when you pay taxes to the county. |
With students mixed around the county there will be less “good” and “bad” schools so this won’t be an issue. Some people closer to the currently less popular schools will still request them because they’re close to home. Others will request them because they like the admissions boost from attending a lower SES school. With time, they will even out. |
Ah, yes. You clearly have your pulse on what people believe and how they behave around here. /s |
I suspect I have a better understanding than you. |
Yes, they can. If they can’t, don’t you think someone like yourself would have challenged the system by now? Why don’t you volunteer to be the test case? |
BS Rich people won’t send their kids into a poor neighborhood and poor people will send theirs across town on two buses to get to a better neighborhood. The schools in the rich neighborhoods will end up overcrowded and the rich people will put up a stink. |
Other districts have done this, see the YouTube video from Utah. Abolish Attendance Boundaries Fairfax will advocate. |
Let them. They can deal with it or go to private. |
Couldn’t find this group’s site - do you have a link? |
Oh i see. It’s the old “I pay your salary so I get to tell you what to do” argument. Yeah, it doesn’t work that way. Never has, and never will. Best of luck though. |

You’re missing the point. You can use any county library or park, the county doesn’t zone you for one. |
And neither library nor parks provide thousands of hours a year of highly regulated, and mandatory educational services. Whats your point? These are different things. |
This is some random video from Utah. You were implying there is a group called “Abolish Attendance Boundaries Fairfax” by using all those capital letters. I guess this movement just exists in your head. The Utah video doesn’t describe a system with no school boundaries. It describes a process where students could more easily transfer to a school other than their base school that has capacity than is currently the case in FCPS, where there are specific and limited grounds to pupil place. So students would still be unable to transfer to popular schools like Chantilly, McLean, or West Springfield that are at or over capacity. On the other hand, a student could more easily transfer to Madison or South Lakes without having to commit, for example, to taking AP or IB courses. But this approach conflicts with recent decisions by FCPS to make student transfers more, not less, difficult, so it seems you’re out of luck for the foreseeable future. |
The same principle applies regardless of the county service. School choice isn’t exactly a new concept and it’s really not controversial |
