You’re missing the point. You can use any county library or park, the county doesn’t zone you for one. |
And neither library nor parks provide thousands of hours a year of highly regulated, and mandatory educational services. Whats your point? These are different things. |
This is some random video from Utah. You were implying there is a group called “Abolish Attendance Boundaries Fairfax” by using all those capital letters. I guess this movement just exists in your head. The Utah video doesn’t describe a system with no school boundaries. It describes a process where students could more easily transfer to a school other than their base school that has capacity than is currently the case in FCPS, where there are specific and limited grounds to pupil place. So students would still be unable to transfer to popular schools like Chantilly, McLean, or West Springfield that are at or over capacity. On the other hand, a student could more easily transfer to Madison or South Lakes without having to commit, for example, to taking AP or IB courses. But this approach conflicts with recent decisions by FCPS to make student transfers more, not less, difficult, so it seems you’re out of luck for the foreseeable future. |
The same principle applies regardless of the county service. School choice isn’t exactly a new concept and it’s really not controversial |
It’s not hard. You could grandfather in some students but eventually abolish all boundaries. This is just the beginning. In the meantime, the Abolish movement in Fairfax will live rent free in your head. |
| McLean will become a city. |
Okay, good luck with that. |
You should be flattered I responded at all but happy to now leave you alone with your fantasies. |
It can't, but it would if it could. The MCA was looking into incorporating as a town or city when it briefly appeared that might be possible in future. However, the Virginia legislature instead renewed the state-wide ban on new city/town incorporations and also the ban on cities/towns annexing adjacent unincorporated land. So that cannot happen. As near as I can tell, this is because sales tax is shared between the state and the local government. So counties lose sales tax revenue if county territory becomes a town or city. |

| Where can we find Abolish bumper stickers? |

An article in favor of new boundary zones rather than abolishing zones completely-

We’re fresh off the disastrous comprehensive review of the last two years. The study you cite is just ideological drivel. Ask the FCPS school board whether they thought the juice was worth the squeeze on the latest comprehensive boundary review, and they will all say no. It was a waste of resources, time, and goodwill across the county. They squandered years where they could’ve actually been working to improve the system, rather than just try to paper over poorer performing schools. |
