Private & Independent Schools
I think your stance is crazy. The friend who reported should not be blamed. She did the right thing. |
Seriously why though? What did she accomplish? The parents should have been told. |
| This is a tiny community so it’s inevitable news will spread much quicker. Most students do not engage in racist behavior. And many schools actively work to prevent, address, and educate around these issues. But it still happens. Not just at Holton. |
The person who reported did the right thing. Ignoring or minimizing harmful behavior protects the behavior, not the community. Accountability is how schools maintain inclusive environments. |
| No one here really knows what they are talking about. I think it would be best to follow the advice of HOS and stop speculating. |
THANK YOU. This is an awful thing that happened, but don't you dare blame the person who reported the vile behavior. |
| Agreed. All the speculation is only doing harm. |
+1 |
Finally an adult is talking. There was a racist message, disciplinary action, and it was announced to the community. I’m not sure what else there is to talk about. If someone is unhappy with the process, there are only two options: share your views with the HOS or leave the school. Not much else. |
WTH? NO |
Well... the HOS shared after pressure from the upper school Black Student Union. They had a meeting about it for some healing and discussion and no one from Holton US attended to support. This caused more harm. The Black Families Affinity group pressured the communication and then it came out. I actually know more from reading DCUM... suspended and given the opportunity to withdraw helps the student find school elsewhere if going to another private. They followed the policy, but the reason there was communication was due to pushback from the students (and their parents). FWIW, I liked the HOS e-mail. The people did what this commenter suggested. And now we are here gossiping. |
I think the email was great, and also great that she highlighted the fact that the privacy of the kid should be respected (even if the kid shared racist meme, which of course is not good). So to the upset parents, no, the school is not going to conduct a witch hunt for each violation in the code of conduct. |
| Is no one remembering the Landon kid who tragically took his own life after a similar incident? Let’s try to approach this with compassion; these are teenage girls involved. |
Agree. |
| Imagine how pathetic it is to post about a student making some edgelord post and then the school acting like it's a hate crime. |
