Holton-Arms Hate Crime Incident

Some of you know nothing about the law and it shows. It’s not a hate crime. Racist, vile, disgusting, against school policy — 100%. Kid should be expelled.

But it’s not a hate crime.

Still disgusting and upsetting. AND she doesn't go to Holton anymore.

1. Wasn't a hate crime
2. Nothing was posted...it was private messages between a student and a non student
3. The student involved no longer attends Holton

That being said, the actions of the student were abhorrent and upsetting. I hope the school helps the students to process and reckon with what happened.

This is correct.

How on earth do you define a hate crime, then?

Feels I'm being gaslighted here!

I'm PP and meant to add that this doesn't rise to a level of a hate crime or violation...but is still horrific. This exactly why people were told not to gossip.

I think the Head of School acted correctly, not so much the parents on DCUM gossiping. Sending racist messages should be punished, but it’s up to the school to decide the appropriate punishment—not the parents.

It’s not illegal to say insanely offensive, racist, vile things. The First Amendment protects speech like that.

A hate crime is committing an ACTUAL crime — like assault, battery, murder — and the motivation for the crime is based on an immutable characteristic of the victim like their race, sexual orientation, or religion.

The email from HOS was incredibly vacuous and poorly written.

Send your own email to the school community. I bet it will be better.

I am no fan of the HOS, but the letter was fine

The student who sent the offending messages and got 2-days of suspension has withdrawn from Holton?

Looks like the Holton comms team is earning its salary.

Actual parent here. I thought it was fine. What else do you want her to say? She’s not going to discuss student discipline in an email to 600+ families.

DP. I don't know who made the call, but that student is no longer at Holton.

Holton parent here. Thought the HOS' email was appropriate, indicating action is being taken and underscoring Holton's commitment to DEI -"...Central to that commitment is our dedication to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Language and actions that demean, exclude, or harm others are incompatible with our mission and the learning environment our community deserves."

Short of identifying the offending student by name, I don't think there's more she could have stated.
