Hailey/Hayley

It's not, "straight to the pole" by any means but it's also serving cocktails with Brittany and Courtney.

Ridiculous. It is every bit as "serious" as Hillary, Leslie, Abbie, Kathy, Emily, Sally, Ali, Lori, Mindy, etc that millions of serious professional adult women have. We've had presidential candidates named Hillary, Nikki, Amy, Tulsi, Carly.

You have presented a mix of classic, "serious enough for an adult" names and golden retriever names.

I don't see how you can think Nikki and Lori and Carly, for example, are anywhere near the same as Hillary or Katherine or Emily, to be honest. Completely different connotation. Can you really not see that?

Hailey/Hayley is also a good name for a golden retriever. Not a serious name for an adult human, as a PP noted.

In my mind, Lori is much more serious than Emily. Emily sounds childlike to me. It truly is all subjective.

Thank you!

Please do tell us what the difference is between Hillary and Hayley, names that sound virtually the same. Or Emily and Hayley.

I personally think Nikki is a terrible name. But I also think her presence on the political scene is evidence that concern about golden retriever, unserious names is pretty silly, especially when paired with statements like "Hillary and Emily are 'serious enough' but Hayley isn't".

"Serious enough?" LOL.

When you have babies currently being named things like Jagger, Ryker, Atlas, Scottie (on a girl), Truce, River (all actual names that I’ve seen)... I don’t think Hailey/Hayley will present any challenges with being taken seriously.

Your perspective changes once you realize that baby naming has become (over time) a contest in “uniqueness” and individuality rather than picking a nice, respectable name for your child. 😳 I’ll take 95% of the names that were popular in the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s/00s over the naming style that is popular now.

I come from a culture where the meaning of names is very important. I think that’s why names like Kylie, Kelsey, Hayley, etc just don’t feel substantive.

The original Hayley, Hayley Mills, was given her mother's maiden name. So Hayley is a surname and it is similar to other old English surnames ending in -ley. They are all place names referring to fields or meadows:

Hayley--hay meadow
Wesley--western meadow
Ashley--ash (tree) meadow
Bradley--wide meadow
Hadley--heather meadow
Stanley--stony meadow
Kinsley--king's meadow
Oakley--oak meadow
Marley--seaside meadow
Harley--hare meadow
Presley--priest's meadow
Bentley--coarse grass meadow
Farley--fern meadow
Whitley--white meadow
Langley--long meadow

I feel stupid for believing this, but I truly thought that people only name their sons Bentley in reference to the car. I had no idea that it’s also a surname!

You don’t like names that end in y sounds.

NP but it seems like you failed to grasp that half of the names PP listed were names of actual, powerful, "serious" adult women. Like sure, in the vacuum of your own imagination, you might find the names Nikki and Carly to be unserious or more suitable for a dog. But in the real world where we all currently life, these are the names of the former US ambassador to the UN and the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Setting aside any political disagreements you might have with those women, they are serious people with important and impressive careers. So here are some accomplished adult humans with these names that you claim are unserious dog names. Hmmm.

They are also incredibly common names, as is Lori. Common HUMAN names. So lots and lots of people with these names. School teachers. Doctors. City council members.

Meanwhile, there are people with what you consider to be "serious" names who are criminals, failure to launch adults, professional dog walkers, etc. I even know dogs names stuff like Nora and Ruth, which you probably believe are more "serious" names.

It's almost like what you think is a "serious" name or a "golden retriever" name is a totally made up categorization that has zero relevance to real life.

Real question: are YOU a golden retriever?
