That shortens summer too. |
Makeup days in June are useless because they occur too late to make up for lost learning earlier in the year. If they were in the calendar in the first place, teachers could plan for them better. |
Well of course there are days this simply allows the last day of school to stay as the last day as long as they aren't under the hours. Last year there were no more lessons in mid June but schools had to "open" two days for requirement purposes. |
Well come 2027-28 do you think the first day will be August 24 or 31? I would say it should be the latter but I'd bet on the former. The last time the schools opened later then the previous year was in 2017 due to Hogan. Outside of the Hogan requirement years it was 1 week before Labor Day but with the extra holidays it has to sometimes be 2 weeks or they'll end after Juneteenth. DP. 31/“st is way too late given how many random days off we give over the year. So much for being consistent. Wanna guess the next school year that begins later then the previous one? 2028-29? https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/calendar/2023-24_TraditionalCalendar.pdf The secular calendar is the same as 2023-24 from August-February but unlike 2024, 2029 isn't a leap year so the end date would be June 14 if they have the same number of off days as 2023-24. |
My kids didn't get through everything last year. |
| This means Taylor doesn't intend to call snow days, right? |
| Hate the 8/24 start. |
So much for consistency. The first day-last scheduled day since 2016-17. Hogan Law (Post Labor Day-June 15) affected the 2017-18 through 2019-20 calendars. 2016-17 8/29-6/16 2017-18 9/5-6/12 HOGAN LAW 2018-19 9/4-6/13 HOGAN LAW-Spring break shortened 2019-20 9/3-6/15 HOGAN LAW 2020-21 8/31-6/16 2021-22 8/30-6/15 2022-23 8/29-6/16 2023-24 8/28-6/13 2024-25 8/26-6/13 2025-26 8/26-6/17 Year starts to extend too long 2026-27 8/25-6/16 Repeat length of previous (current) year |
Not wasted days. Even people not celebrating appreciate a three day weekend to have a breather. |
It’s really hard with kids in college and HS. My college kid needs to do internships that usually run the first part of the summer, but my youngest needs to be back weeks before school starts due to fall sports tryouts bring in early August. So we really can’t take a summer vacation all thirteen. When my oldest got into college, I had looked at the four years of her spring break and was excited that one year would line up with McPS. I’m surprised that after decades of doing spring break the week before Easter, McPS is changing to after Easter for 2027. |
Uhhh,no we don't. |
They've done spring break the week after Easter before this. It's not frequent, but it does happen. |
Of course we do. 1 day isn't enough. Alternatively, we need to automatically use the mid-year make up days. The June days are the worst of all possible options. |
The first such day is September 11 which is soon after Labor Day. The other day April 21 is a Wednesday so no long weekend there. |
What about late July? |
