26/27 Calendar

Huh -- I just realized something. Usually the spring break is the week before Easter through Easter Monday. It looks like for 2027 they are doing the week AFTER easter.

I wonder why they did that. I had literally been looking forward to it for years, because it was the ONLY year that my oldest child's college spring break was going to align with MCPS break, and I thought we could take one last family vacation. MCPS manages to screw me again. Sigh.

I think they wanted to align with Frederick County's spring break, because many staff live in Frederick.

Contingency days they won't use, because the union will throw a shit fit

Some of the contingency days are so early in the year they are unusable. How are we starting a week earlier and still ending on June 16? What a mess.

I agree. I thought private and public schools would line up next year.

We're starting a day earlier, not a week earlier. This year: August 26-June 17. Next year: August 25-June 16.

That start date is two weeks before Labor Day - this year, the school year started one week before.

Yeah, but that's because Labor Day is a week later.

Hmm, normally in election years, they make the day before Election Day a day off for a 4 day weekend. Not doing that anymore. Too bad, we always took a small trip.

I oppose any calendar that only has one snow day built in. This is ridiculous. We need at least 4 built in.

2020-21 went August 31-June 16 the last time Labor Day was September 7. Some of this is the 2 Muslim holidays but September 11 and April 21 are silly as Rosh Hashana is on a weekend and the day before Passover doesn't warrant a day off.

They were very clear in all the calendar sessions this year at the Board that they wanted to move it a week earlier. I definitely expected this calendar to pass.

This year the first day was August 26 and they were closed November 3. Next year the first day is August 25 yet the closure is November 9 instead of November 2. I wonder if they expected to start August 31 but because of the added closures putting the end so late, they created and chose the option to start earlier but forgot to move that closure.

Those additional holidays are the reasons why. Maryland law is way too inflexible!

It's about time they finally went after Easter! They last did that in 2016!
What college is your oldest child at?

I know that is disappointing but college spring breaks throughout the country are in March while spring breaks at ES/MS/HS further north are usually in April regardless of Easter. Maybe the college spring break will be a week earlier then expected (2 weeks before MCPS) and wouldn't have aligned anyways.
