Why is lack of Real ID an issue if you have a passport or don’t fly?

I read that you will need one to enter some government buildings that require ID to enter. If they don't require ID you don't need Real ID there.

Some people are going to need to visit a Social Securty office in person, if they can't use the online tools, in order to apply for benefits.

Since the Social Security offices are federal government buildings, will they need Real ID or a passport to gain entry?

It’s a national identity card. Trump has plans for it.

I got mine at a NoVA DMV office today. I recently moved, and needed to change the address on my driver's license anyway and I fly often enough, so I got the Real ID.

It did give me pause that the application asked me to list any conditions I have that require medication. That felt intrusive, and is info I don't want to just hand over to the gov't. But whatever.

My guess, merely a guess, is that it will vary based on which specific building one wishes to access.

That question came from Virginia, not the Feds. They are trying to figure out if your medications would have the side effect of impairing driving.

Nope. You will need a passport or RealID to enter a federal building, military base, etc. On this one topic I have less sympathy than the rest of all the BS that is coming out. This was actually planned prior to this Administration. I have taken my elderly parents to go get their licenses with the star, and they keep their passports current. This has been in the works forever.

Not OP. It's pointless. Waste of everyone's time. Yes, my entire family has them but there is ZERO added security from them. Don't get what the big deal is aside from not letting granny fly.

I think there is added value. Virginia has very strict drivers license laws because the 9/11 hijackers got their licenses in Va, so many of the u documents people in Va have Maryland licenses and tags. Not sure what they will do now? Just drive without a license?

If you don't have a REAL ID license, the police and ICE may arrest you.

Apparently, some state & federal buildings can ban you from entering without a Real ID. I haven't seen a list of those that will nor have I heard of any incidents.

Can't call me for jury duty if I can't get in the building.

I had to rush to get a Real ID 3 years ago when my parent was hospitalized at Ft Belvoir. Left from work with only a DL, obviously no passport or other documentation with me. I think I was issued a temporary pass under emergency circumstances but eventually had to get a Real ID via dmv (took me two trips - one back home to get my marriage license from 25+ years ago) and then I could get onto the base.

I still haven’t renewed my passport. It expired.

Do you need a Real ID to purchase alcohol?

Oh gosh, really? I have not been in a big rush because I have a passport but I was planning to do it this summer. My license expires in 2026 as well. If you are right, I will wait!!

OP here — I renewed mine ans found out it didn’t change the expiration date either, which ticked me off. My expires at the end of the year, so I’ve got to go back. Not happy.
