Forgot to say I am an AU STEM faculty. The university is also investing in STEM, which will lead to changes over the next 2-3 years. |
Agree with this post. Excellent school in these areas. It is also located in a lovely part of DC. The AU Honors program offers a great opportunity for additional services and attention. AU is definitely expensive |
I completely agree with this assessment. --humanities professor |

American is one of those rare Goldilocks "just right" size unis in a perfect college city. All the benefits of DC with a cozy campus.
It's high on my DS's list and he wants to study poli sci! |
I teach there and would send my child there. I wasn't going to comment, because I feel like I'm obviously biased. But figured I'd reply to this point to give a different perspective. I see my students get terrific internships and grad school placements. We have smaller classes so I get to know my students well. I think it's a great blend of smaller classes but also R1 research opportunities. So, obviously biased, but I wanted to say that I would send my kid there. |
Where did they end up after a year? Were they there for undergrad? |
Can you elaborate? What were kid's expectations and what was the reality after they set foot on ground? |
Your kid may not want to be near you. Just sayin. |
Add business to this. Their business school has been really taking off. |
How is it going in this era (under current white house)? What effects if any for graduating seniors? |
NP and I’ve heard general remarks that Burwell was bad, but rarely (maybe never) any specifics. What was so bad about her? |
Did they hire her to lead AU through the pandemic? She's still around at AU in a role as a lecturer at AU's Sine Institute of Policy & Politics. Before she held government roles HHS and Director of OMB and as president of the Walmart Foundation and leading programs at the Bill & Melinda Gates Found |
| I was so impressed with AU career services when I worked there in the early 2000s. Each school had a dedicated counselor and internship coordinator — and we had ongoing relationships with so many well known employers in DC and NYC. We routinely took students on site visits and then posted internships and jobs at these employers for our students. We also hosted alumni networking events where alums were eager to make connections and share opportunities. Highly motivated, smart kids can have amazing outcomes given AU’s location and its dedication to students. |
| While GW embraces its location and the opportunities in DC, my opinion is that AU is a lesser step-sibling. From the Tenleytown campus, it's a 15 minute walk just to get to metro to access the city. The school is having major enrollment and financial issues and has a reputation as a school where full pay kids that didn't get into GW (let alone Georgetown) but want to be in DC attend. |
Zero background in higher education, horrible manager. |
