I also think the politics of this are really complex. OSSE is paying for 75 special students to attend Kingsbury now (vast majority were from DCPS; about 18 from various charters). That means the city has an interest in what happens with that school/facility. So while this isn't a DCPS facility, the State Superintendent and DME are stakeholders in a way that they wouldn't be otherwise. I can't figure out why the Board is even considering doing this now. They are going through a management review, and a board review. It's likely there will be Board turnover, and they may be turnover in the administration. Everyone should just hold tight for the next 12 months -- rather than potentially tying the hands of a new leadership team. |
| There isn't going to be any administrative overhaul at LAMB. The hope for years has been to put everyone at the same campus. Now there is a wonderful opportunity to do just that, steps away from the "original" Misouri) campus, in a building anyone with eyes has been ogling for at least a decade. I am fully confident that this will go forward, and quickly. It is a winning situation for everyone involved. SD Ave is not a viable long term option due to flooding issues in the portion rented from Perry St, over which LAMB has no control but which cause damage and stress. Start planning. |
Not a winning situation for Kingsbury. Those kids are going to be schlepping for hours to the suburbs. And charter board partners and the private investigators aren't playing. I think there will be changes. |
How does this work? Who decides to overhaul the board? |
| Diane and Cristina pick the board members so I don't see how the board can force, demand or implement administration changes. There should be administration turn over after the sexual abuse scandal but the fact that Diane and Cristina are still at the school and still in charge means that the board and the parent community are powerless and are not able to demand change. |
|
LAMB has hired an outside nonprofit called Charter Board Partners (google them) to look at their board composition, gaps and procedures in light of the assault. There are no constraints on their advice or recommendations. It includes illuminating gaps in Board members' skills, identification of others to join the Board.
LAMB has also hired a national private investigatory firm based in New York to try to piece together all of what happened when Fernandez was on staff. They were just given a green light to begin by MPD and the prosecutor. There's another group reviewing their personnel racyoces and student safety procedures to identify gaps and recommend changes. |
This is just a side note....maybe I will start another thread in the future....however.... I really don't understand why there is always an assumption on DCUM that blacks and latinos are poor? I find these statements rather ignorant and off-putting! |
+1. I know a few black families at LAMB--all are affluent. |
Will these reports be shared with parents? Otherwise it's kind of a fox guarding the hen house situation. |
|
They committed to sharing, yes.
But there are also victims' parents preparing/considering suing the school. They are waiting until the criminal case is over. That will keep pressure for change on the school and board, but may also impede what can or will be shared for a time. |
| Is there a move to sue the principal in addition to the school? I've heard rumors about this.... |
I would like this conversation to move to the other board about this and keep this about the consolidated campus. Thanks much. |
And I would like to win the powerball tonight. The issues aren't unrelated. Why would LAMB's board, which has its hands full, be trying to do this now? |
The board is doing this because Cristina and Diane tell them to do it. The board is not independent and the reports that they have ordered from independent parties will be shared with Cridtina and Diane before they are shared with the parent community. The fact that the board has not suspended the administration or downgraded their access to the "independent" investigation tells you how much power the board has. |
| I think it's quite clear that the reason the Board and administration at LAMB want to move now on Kingsbury is that it is available now, wasn't before and won't be in the future. So that leaves now. Happens to coincide with the school's need for a consolidated space. Also happens to coincide with a criminal investigation of a faculty member. However, the fact remains that the school needs to consolidate for obvious administrative reasons and the purpose of keeping kids together with their friends and teachers, and there is a terrific space suddenly coming available in Ward 4. I wouldn't read any great administrative conspiracy into this; it's pretty cut and dried. |
