It seems more likely the two other buildings will be used for administrative purposes.

So, again, it remains unclear how many 9-12 grade students can be accommodated at KAA without significant, additional expenditures.

Are they including the trailers in the "security vestibules?"

Suggest you drive over to KAA. It is entirely possible. The road is pretty secure. And, the buildings could be used for storage space, etc, Most high schools need space for theater and music storage, etc.

Sounds like the two buildings may turn out to be expensive garden sheds.

We get it. You don't want relief for this area students.. Do you really think all the space in a school is for instruction? Neverthel3ss, if kids can go to trailers, they could go to one of these buildings

The difference is they’ll tolerate existing trailers and modulars to some degree but less likely to create new situations where kids are attending classes in multiple buildings.

And, guess what? they are still adding trailers. Would you really prefer your kid in a trailer? Sad that you cannot be happy for neighborhoods that, hopefully will not face frequent boundary changes and long bus rides.

You shouldn’t accuse other people of a lack of empathy when this purchase means other capital projects will be delayed and other families will be redistricted to back-fill at least one of the schools that would send kids to a new school, assuming it’s a local school.

Other capital projects aren't being delayed, they just won't get to skip the western high school in the line as you were hoping they would.

According to FCPS website, the 2023 Bond referendum funding the "planning and design" phase at Cub Run ES, Union Mill ES, Centre Ridge ES, Poplar Tree ES, Waples Mill ES, Sangster ES, Saratoga ES, Virginia Run ES, and Franklin Middle School (MS). The pattern for the past decade or so has been consistent, the schools that get funded for "planning and design" one cycle get funded for the "construction" phase in the next cycle 2 years later. I don't see how they could possibly maintain that and still dedicate funding to acquiring and renovating KAA. Clearly some of those planned capital projects will now be delayed. The current CIP has the spending for a Western HS in the "Future Project Spending" column (post-FY2030). The Western High School is the project that presumably will be skipping forward in the line, per the CIP, while others from the 2023 bond cycle will now inevitably be delayed as a result.

My kids go to one of those schools and the school does not NEED a renovation. It could wait. I've seen worse schools that are total dumps that could use it more than our school but I don't think are even in the queue.

I am surprised that Sangster is on that list when there are other schools nearby within 30 minutes, such as Lewis, in much worse shape.

DP - I don’t know the condition of Sangster right now, maybe they’re anticipating more AAP kids and need to expand a little. My kids had camps or activities this summer and last at Newington Forest, Halley, Lorton Station, White Oaks, Laurel Hill, and Orange Hunt, and I have to say they were all in pretty good shape overall … except Orange Hunt, which felt like a rambling, crumbling husk in comparison. Peeling paint, holes in the ceiling tiles, flickering lights, the floors felt a little uneven in parts. Even the parking lot was covered in pot holes and overgrown with weeds. Maybe it got the cheap renos at the same time as Lewis and McLean.

The principal at my kid’s school said that facilities will come out and do minor work on the schools (extra mowing and landscaping was what she was specifically talking about) but that she had to stay on them and call basically every day until they showed up. So it’s yet another thing where it’s not standardized from school to school.

A lot of the inside maintenance depends on the care by custodians. That is up to the principal to enforce.

This was exterior too. It was surprising since most of the buildings we’ve been in have been kept up fairly well all things considered.

They also have a lot of the modular classrooms which didn’t seem to be in the best shape.

And in the 2016 CIP the Future Western HS was planned for 2021-2025, ahead of all those you just listed. It was also only projected to cost $120 million back then, but things change. It got pushed back when they lost the land to the Saudis for shady political reasons. Now that the land (and building) is available again it is back in its rightful place in the queue, where was planned all along.

DP. Obviously the most recent CIP is the one that guides current decisions, and a lot happened since 2016 to add capacity to other schools serving the western part of the county. The fact that the school kept getting pushed out itself demonstrates that the need has not been considered acute.

The same was true when 2016 was the most recent CIP. It was only pushed out because the land was sold and they couldn't find another suitable location. The need was still there it just wasn't possible to build. A lot has changed since the 2023 CIP and the land is available again, so back to the top it goes!

Chantilly has no more space. Centreville is slated to get space in the future. Westfield is packed.

South Lakes, Oakton, Herndon, and Madison were all expanded. Centreville is/was about to be expanded. Most of this happened after 2016.
