Once a public school system has decided not to allow any kids in the system to sit for a national exam because some kids from one religion might have to use makeup days as accommodations, it’s gotten out of hand.

I also have a TJ alum and am furious at the new admissions standards— or lack thereof.

Not voting for more of the same. I voted for Youngkin today. And you can do the “you were never a Dem to being with” thing. But, this is my first R vote in a general election (I’ve taken the R ballot a couple of times in primaries, for example to vote against Trump).

I have written members, attended townhall, watched SB meeting, signed petitions and carried signs. And it has made no difference. We can’t keep going like this.

And no. I’m not a moron. I’m pretty clear eyed about who Youngkin is. But, I also know that McAuliffe is in bed with teachers unions, and they are the ones who kept school closed last year.

Sure. We believe you. *eye roll*

The beauty is that we'll see next week. All the liberal bravado here will get put to the test.

DP here.

Granted this is an anonymous board, but telling someone whose beef is that their concerns have fallen on deaf ears that they aren't credible is not going to help the Democrats in this or future elections. The consistent message from local Democrats in recent years has been that they only deign to listen when people say what they already want to hear.

You know, it’s McAuliffe, the SB, Brabrand, et al.’s eye rolling at parents with very legitimate concerns about things like TJ admissions, VMPI, mask and xpvaxx policies, closed schools, cancelling AP exams for O Days, lack of instruction on O Days, Zoom in a Room last year, athletics returning last year but fine arts still being restricted, the awfulness of the situation for SN kids, lack of summer school planning, school renaming when kids weren’t even allowed in the buildings they renamed, etc., etc. that got McAuliffe into the position of possibly losing what should be an very easy win.

Parents have legitimate concerns. Real concerns, not CRT and a porno book in the Hs library astroturfed concerns. Thee McAuliffe crew rolls their eyes, calls parents who raise issues about TJ or VMPI or loss of instructional time on O days or similar issues morons and says people who question the wisdom of moving AP exams because a religious minority would have to use the makeup days must be Trumpkins. Not only are Dems not listening to parents concerns— they are dismissing or outright mocking them.

Why would I vote for someone whose surrogates think I’m a moron because I’m concerned about teacher collective bargaining or VMPI or other statewide issues.

Keep dismissing parents concerns, and parents will keep voting for not McAuliffe.

This. I’m sorry you don’t think my concerns about education in FCPS are legit. I’ve spent 18 months having everyone from Brabrand to the SB to McAuliffee to teachers say so. Fine. Fortunately I had another option. Maybe You GM in will be better. Maybe not. But at least he doesn’t dismiss concerns about where education is headed out of hand. I get it. You think people who aren’t lock step with the SB and Brabrand don’t have valid concerns. I guess it’s good I had another option on the ballot besides FFX Dems.

Renaming schools and redoing TJ admissions at the height of the pandemic
Making it so TJ Admissions are not merit based
Giving up the Carson site for the Western Co HS and using Hutchinson
VMPI
14 day quarantines, while all counties around us are making 7 days plus a negative PCR a work
Zoom in a Room and class monitors last year
2 DOJ lawsuits against FCPS on FAPE violations
Equity everything
Stopping all education for 11 days this year so that we can celebrate religious holidays. In a public school
Cancelling AP Psych and EnvironScience Exams because they fall on O Days and telling kids if they want to take them, they have to use the makeup block. U
The W. Potomac expansion
5 Eastern Co IB sites that struggle to graduate 40 full diploma candidates a year between them
And the entire foster luck of last year, starting with BB crashing, and going through not opening school in August not because it was unsafe, but because Brabrand gave all the teachers ADAs

Show me the conspiracy theory.

Show me which of these concerns are not grounded in reality.

Because every time you tell me these concerns are not valid, I become less inclined to vote D.

I have to wonder about the enthusiasm gap between the two. In my local Fairfax neighborhood, there are a lot of Youngkin signs and less than a handful of McAuliffe signs. Way out of proportion to the Trump vs. Biden dynamic last fall. The only issue that could this neighborhood like that is education.

What about VMPI?

Which one would “Youngkin” fix?

I live in a heavily Indian area in W Fairfax. And this is a large and growing group that isn’t being considered. My neighborhood FB page is furious about TJ and the SB blowing off their requests for a virtual option until ES kids can be vaxxed. Quite a few Biden voters switching R in this population.

I heard a LOT of Youngkin talk this past weekend while at the various sports games. This is talk from friends that I know are Democrats through their various social media posts, chats we've had, and signs on their cars/yards.

McAuliffe signs are disappearing in my liberal Loudoun neighborhood as well. The Youngkin campaign has been out canvassing HEAVILY in my neighborhood and I've yet to have one McAuliffe person. I work from home and we also have a doorbell cam that alerts to motion, so I'd know if someone had been here. I think Terry might be going on the old "Loudoun is blue and what flips the state" mentality and it could be a nail in his coffin. I'm worried.

I'm in Leesburg and as anyone in this area knows, the Leesburg Halloween parade is a HUGE event for those running during an election year. The overall cheer/boo of the crowd for a candidate's float/car has never been wrong when predicting which candidate will win, whether it be for town mayor, governor, school board, etc. I'm anxious to hear what the crowd does when each candidate's group comes through.

Wow we're still going back and forth about this. Call me skeptical, but I am not expecting the future governor to do much for education. And I'm basing this on past history.

If I were McAuliffe (or Youngkin for that matter), I’d be holding prime time town halls for Arlington, W. FFX, E FFX and Loudoun, and PWC, as well as one on SNs and one on gifted education. Livestream them and take questions submitted and chosen by a moderator.

Talk to parents and avoid words like equity.

As the soccer moms of NOVA go, so goes the election. Another rally with Biden really isn’t going to help McAuliffe as much as getting his education ideas out there. Assuming he has any, which I have seen no evidence of.

But what do I know? I’m apparently a MAGA moron.

That's a lame cop-out. There are many areas where FCPS has been falling down on the job in the recent years, and the responsibility lies with the Superintendent and the School Board. The buck stops there. Brabrand's response to the challenges he was confronting was to go all-in on embracing the equity agenda ("equity is at the center of everything we do") as if that was going to shore up his position with the School Board, and the School Board itself has been all over the map, with various priorities that took center stage that were not well aligned with what parents care about the most. And, when they get challenged or called out, their response is never to drill down into how they could do fulfill their responsibilities better; rather, as PP alluded to, they get their proxies (many of whom are prominent local Democrats) to lambaste any critics, call us Republicans pretending to be Democrats, complain about "astroturfing," and hurl various other insults like "RWNJ," "POS," etc.

I don't expect you to acknowledge the legitimacy of any of those concerns - you are among those who prefer the one-line put-downs to any serious examination of the problems. We don't think Youngkin has all the answers but at least there is the possibility that he'll install some better people in key positions in state government and start to change the tone towards one where problems are actually acknowledged and not constantly swept under the rug.

Same in my Fairfax UMC neighborhood. Lots of affluent Indian and Asian families — countless houses with Youngkin / Pyon signs. I’ve only seen one Biden sign.
