Preschool Clothing

My first is going to preschool. He's going to be in a 2's class and is not yet potty-trained.

What do kids wear? My DS is usually in sweatpants and a long sleeve t-shirt in the fall/winter. Is that normal? Or are kids wearing jeans and a sweater?

Yes, this is silly. But I don't want other moms talking behind my back.

Kids should be comfy and able to play. Sounds like your kid is lucky enough to be in exactly those kinds of clothes! Sweatpants are fine. Anyone who talks behind your back because your kid isn't dressed up for school is a lunatic and shouldn't be your concern. I think stretchy, cotton clothes are best for all preschool kids of both sexes.

Fine but I'd would have a few pair of nicer jeans with teeshirts and prepare for them to get ruined. Target/walmart fine.

Agree--whatever makes them comfortable. It's not a fashion show.

preschool teacher here!

There is a huge variety of clothes that the kids wear. Luckily, their Peers don't care about fashion, so what you should be worried about is:

--weather appropriate
--washable (please don't send them in their best dresses)
--Velcro shoes (laces only when they can tie their own shoes)
--pants that are easy up/easy down in the bathroom.

Jeans, t-shirt or polo. I wanted DS to get used to wearing nicer clothes (by nicer I mean less comfortable) since he will be going to a private school with uniforms when he is in K.

My nephew refused to wear "hard pants" (jeans and khakis) after spending his toddler years in sweats and athletic pants.

Don't you think making a kid wear jeans for three years to avoid a week of "I don't want to wear 'hard pants'" when kindergarten starts is a bit of overkill? Preschool teacher's 'easy up/easy down' point makes a lot of sense and (I think) casts another vote for stretchy stuff without buttons and zips.

The boys in our twos class wear jeans or knit/sweat/track-type pants with tees, so you could go either way. I'd say that the kids who are potty-training tend to the knit pants because it makes it easier to use the toilet. Also, the kids can get messy--eating, running around outside, doing arts and crafts--so don't send anything that isn't easy to wash. Really, as long as the clothes are clean and in good repair, it's fine.

Kids at the (expensive) preschool that my daughter just finished (2s class) do not wear anything special. Carters, hannah from Costco, hand me downs... with a few name brand winter coats and boots thrown in.

Both my boys were able to navigate the snap/zipper or jeans at the age of two.

I hate seeing little boys in basically pajamas (sweatpants) at school. Looks so sloppy.

Nothing beats jeans - ever. They look great and last until the boy grows out of them. Like a PP above, none of my kids had a problem with the snap on jeans or pulling them down.

Please send your children to school in clothing that fits correctly, is weather appropriate, and can be put in the washer. Please have your child wear shoes that will allow for safe climbing and running. Please do not have your child wear the following; suspenders, belts, flip flops, crocs, button and zipper pants, tutus, onsies, tights, and party shoes. Thank you!

Put him in whatever he's comfortable with, he can move in, and you won't be upset about if it gets ruined. Pants should be something he can readily pull up and down, because even for kids who are still wearing diapers, preschool teachers often encourage them to start taking some ownership of their toileting by having them do the pants themselves.

I agree with everything except the zipper -- kids can work a zipper or just leave it down. I like snaps on pants/jeans myself - not buttons or hooks.

I would also add no overalls.

I teach preschool for four-year-olds, and your boys must be advanced in that area. I still have to help many children with zippers, snaps and buttons on pants.

Agree with previous preschool teachers--soft, comfy clothes that can get messed up. We use washable art supplies and smocks, but my goal is make sure the children to learn through art and play, not worry about keeping their clothes pristine.

Most of my boy students wear sweatpants, athletic pants, or jeans/khakis, with t-shirts. For a two-year-old, sweatpants and a long-sleeve t-shirts sounds fine.
