Don't you think making a kid wear jeans for three years to avoid a week of "I don't want to wear 'hard pants'" when kindergarten starts is a bit of overkill? Preschool teacher's 'easy up/easy down' point makes a lot of sense and (I think) casts another vote for stretchy stuff without buttons and zips.
Both my boys were able to navigate the snap/zipper or jeans at the age of two. I hate seeing little boys in basically pajamas (sweatpants) at school. Looks so sloppy.
I teach preschool for four-year-olds, and your boys must be advanced in that area. I still have to help many children with zippers, snaps and buttons on pants. Agree with previous preschool teachers--soft, comfy clothes that can get messed up. We use washable art supplies and smocks, but my goal is make sure the children to learn through art and play, not worry about keeping their clothes pristine. Most of my boy students wear sweatpants, athletic pants, or jeans/khakis, with t-shirts. For a two-year-old, sweatpants and a long-sleeve t-shirts sounds fine.
