Preschool Clothing

What do kids wear? My DS is usually in sweatpants and a long sleeve t-shirt in the fall/winter. Is that normal? Or are kids wearing jeans and a sweater?

Yes, this is silly. But I don't want other moms talking behind my back.

Lots of kids do wear jeans with snaps when they're not potty-trained. As a former preschool teacher who changed a diaper or two, I think it's incredibly lazy for a preschool teacher to request no zippers or snaps. C'mon -- it takes an extra few seconds, if that.

I did not see kids wearing sweatpants all the time, but generally some will wear sweatpants here and there.

Younger preschool kids dressed by their moms might wear a sweater occasionally, but the older kids tend towards long-sleeve t-shirts. Most preschool rooms are too overheated for kids to be comfy in a sweater.

Jeans with stretchy waists and no buttons/zippers are best.

Preschool teacher's 'easy up/easy down' point makes a lot of sense and (I think) casts another vote for stretchy stuff without buttons and zips.

Both my boys were able to navigate the snap/zipper or jeans at the age of two.

I hate seeing little boys in basically pajamas (sweatpants) at school. Looks so sloppy.

I'm not the biggest fan of sweatpants, either, but for preschoolers they're great. We were generously given two giant bags full of hand-me-downs from my nephews and once my DS started wearing the sweatpants he insisted on them. I've bought some "jogger" style sweatpants and pull-on twill pants from OshKosh as well and they're cute and indestructible.

PP Preschool Teacher, Why no crocs?

My 2 year old has big fat feet and it's so hard to find summer shoes that fit him. I assumed since it'll still be hot in September that he could wear his crocs.

Also why no tights? We do tights sometimes instead of leggings to avoid having to do socks in addition to leggings. It's no harder for our daughter to pull up the tights than the leggings. And I could care less what happens to them. But I'm ordering clothes for fall now, and would love to avoid burdening her teacher--so I'd love to understand the problem!

What is wrong with regular velcro sneakers in the summer. Crocs STINK - literally.

Our preschool requests kids wear socks and sneakers or other completely closed shoes so they don't get mulch in their shoes at the playground.

I hate seeing little boys in cartoon t-shirts and sweatpants. So ugly and cheap-looking. A nice solid colored t or polo and jeans or elastic waist pants look so much better and are just as easy to get on and off for potty training.

As I said in my post, he has very wide feet and it is incredibly difficult to find ANY shoes that fit him. His crocs don't stink. Maybe try bathing your child?

So they wear sneakers and socks even when it's hot out. Got it! Thanks.

I'm the OP. I didn't say cartoon t-shirts. Just plain t-shirts.

What sort of elastic pants that aren't jeans or sweatpants are you talking about?

I guess this is the sort of annoying mom I'm talking about. Thinking a two year old looks "cheap."

Seriously, did you think every mother in your school would approve of every choice you made?

There is a huge variety of clothes that the kids wear. Luckily, their Peers don't care about fashion, so what you should be worried about is:

--weather appropriate
--washable (please don't send them in their best dresses)
--Velcro shoes (laces only when they can tie their own shoes)
--pants that are easy up/easy down in the bathroom.

another preschool teacher here (and also mom). I second everything here. Please, please, please do not send your child in things that they can't do or undo themselves. I cannot tell you how much time I spend unbuckling and buckling belts, buttoning pants, etc. -- time I'd rather be spending teaching and learning with your child!

And like others have said, your child will get messy. Assume everything will have juice and paint on it at the end of the day.

Cartoon t-shirts are ugly and cheap-looking. Where did PP call the toddler/preschooler "cheap"?

DS has lots of light-weight pants and shorts with one easy-to-undo snap in the front and no zipper in the fly. Very cute, great to move around in and all have the elastic taps to tighten the waistband. Old Navy and the Gap.

I hate sweatpants and athletic pants on little boys, too. Jeans or the above pants.
