We've had it for almost 3 weeks, I keep the door to my son's room open all the time unless he's asleep and we're still awake (roughly 1.5 hours a night), open the windows when I'm home, etc., and it still smells horribly. I have heard about things offgassing, but we have bought a number of IKEA products (a couple from the same line, HEMNES, and a futon with similar mattress) and none of them have smelled like this. He's been coughing and had a runny nose lately, and I'm afraid that's the reason why.
I'm kicking myself for even buying the stupid thing, but I loved the design (slides out for a full bed, storage drawers, both of which are great for our tiny house, 3 sides to keep him from falling out of bed) and of course the price. We bought a nice, "non-toxic" crib, which is being handed down to #2, but when we started looking at the price tag of similar twin daybeds, we just couldn't stomach it. Now I'm wishing we had just bitten the bullet and bought the expensive one, although I didn't actually find something I really liked. Everyone talks about how great their cribs are, but this bed has me second-guessing buying anything from IKEA again, even though it's what fits in our budget. I generally don't buy used beds or similar. Will this stop smelling? I think it's actually the mattress AND the bed that smell. Is there a way to return these things? It took us the better part of a day to put it together, and we don't have a car big enough to return it assembled. I have emailed IKEA customer service, 3 days ago, and heard nothing back. We, of course, tossed the packaging, as there is no way to take this apart and put it back into the box. We also don't have anywhere to store boxes of that size anyway, and we also had nowhere to put it to "offgas" prior to use. DH started climbing out of the crib, so we had to move him quickly. This is what we bought: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30080316/ http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10272203/#/20272212 I guess if we can't return it we can try and sell it on Craigslist at a bit of a loss, but honestly I'd feel bad about putting this in anyone's home! We were gone on vacation, though left the air on and had someone coming to check on our cat once a day, and our whole house stunk when we returned because of this bed. I read reviews of this before we bought it, and they were good. Maybe if I just got rid of the mattress, the bed would eventually stop smelling? I don't want to expose my kid to this, and I'm pregnant, so feeling real regret at this decision right now. |
| Wow! I've had my eye on this same daybed for a while now, and I've never heard of it off-gassing as badly as you describe it! Maybe it is just the mattress? Does it fit mattresses from other stores? If so, I'd see if taking out the mattress makes a difference. It would be a shame to toss the entire thing out if it might be just the mattress. |
Since I'm working from home today I moved the mattress out of that room and will see if that helps. It really is a pretty cool bed, and I haven't seen anything else like it. I would caveat that if you have carpet, it might not roll out as easily as it does on hardwood. I *believe* it fits a standard twin size mattress, but I will measure it to be sure. I did smell the mattress alone, and it does stink horribly. Even the mattress pad and sheets on it smelled bad. New question, anywhere local that sells great non-toxic, non-smelling mattresses? I think this bed has to have a foam or latex style mattress, not one with inner springs, since it's on a platform. |

We bought the exact same bed frame and mattress. Except the wrong HEMNES arrived, it was the smaller version with no storage, but we ended up keeping the smaller one.
I didn't notice any smell, but we also had it set up for about a month before we ever used it, so maybe all the smell disappeared by then. And didn't have any respiratory issues either. You may be extra sensitive to the smell because you are pregnant? If you are unsure, just wait another week to let it dissipate. |
I considered the pregnancy thing, too, because that's definitely a factor in how I smell things, but even my DH with horrible sense of smell (numerous sinus issues) says it stinks. |
| Have you tried calling IKEA about it? Maybe there is an issue with your particular set and they can replace it? I think they have pretty strict standards about what chemicals they use in their construction, but perhaps you can call to make sure. |
| I've tried buying stuff chairs at Ikea and had to return them because the smell was so horrible. Perhaps it just happens occasionally, but I certainly wouldn't chance it with something my child would sleep on. |

I'd return the mattress right away and see if that solves the problem. I've never had an offgassing problem with IKEA; they're pretty good about that kind of thing.
Our son's bed (IKEA Kura) has this mattress http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005G02ESA No smell, very comfy. |

I'd call them, not wait for an email response. You bought a foam mattress and those things ALWAYS stink (like, always -- I absolutely hate foam for this reason), but I believe IKEA has a satisfaction guarantee for like 90 days, so you can exchange it.
I'm super sensitive to smells, and none of our non-foam IKEA mattresses have ever smelled, so my guess is that if you go with a nicer non-foam mattress, that will resolve the issue. IKEA furniture does off-gas a bit sometimes, even if it's wood and not particle board, but that wouldn't last more than a few days. Definitely exchange the mattress. |
| We bought that daubed this spring and haven't had issues. We got two of the $149 mattresses- not sure what the name is... |
|
We have this one in our spare room and LOVE it.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40228708/ We got a foam mattress from overstock and it is great. |

Ugh, OP, that sounds terrible. I'm a big fan of Ikea, and have never had an issue like that. I would suspect that it's the mattress rather than the bed, and I know that Ikea exchanges mattresses within a certain time frame (90 days?). You could try a different model.
We have the Hemnes daybed the the black stain, which is different from the white one in that it is solid wood (that's why we bought the black even though I prefer the look of the white one). No smell issues there. We have foam mattresses on it (two stacked) that Ikea doesn't carry anymore (it was called Favang). Those also never smelled. Anyway, I'd try a different mattress. Hopefully that will solve the issue. If not, you might be able to exchange the bed as well, and if you still want a daybed try the solid wood black version. |

We bought an IKEA sofabed for DC's playroom. The off-gassing was horrific and lasted for well over a month. It was really awful. We kept the windows open as much as we could, but the smell was just suffocating. It did eventually go away.
We did not have that problem with our IKEA mattress, but it wasn't boxed up and sealed the way the sofabed was. |
| Hope you find a solution soon. I'm thinking it's more the mattress and not the actual bed. |
| We bought a similar mattress and it didn't smell much at all. I'd return it. |
