Bought IKEA daybed and mattress and it stinks

Anonymous
OP here, and thought an update would be helpful to let anyone else know that IKEA will accept returns on children's mattresses. It is apparently not well known as I had to involve a manager to get them to accept it back, but she says that the children's mattresses were not subject to the exchange only policy on mattresses. I also returned the bed with no issues. Glad that's behind us. Ordering a Land of Nod bed next I guess.

Ikea sells toxic furniture and mattresses. They are supposedly not as toxic as other brands, but who cares?? Toxic is toxic. And just because a mattress stops smelling after a while does not mean the toxicity level is any less. And since you are pregnant, I would not buy from Ikea things. You need to buy an organic mattress.

Our Ikea mattresses have also smelled for weeks when they're new. We kept using them anyway. I've given up trying to find non-toxic stuff, I just cross my fingers that a company as big as Ikea will do everything it can to avoid lawsuits and reputational damage.

I have that same daybed plus mattresses and it doesn't smell. At all.

Have the same daybed and no smell issues. We did buy a different Ikea mattress and had to return it because it smelled horribly and caused major issues for me (sensitive, allergic, asthmatic). Ikea DID let us return it for store credit -- it's not an exchange only mattress policy.

If anyone is looking for a relatively inexpensive, non-toxic kids mattress, Overstock sells the Tobia line of eco-foam mattresses. They are Oekotex certified. We bought two of them with a coupon for my daughters and they are super comfortable.

I have heard about things offgassing, but we have bought a number of IKEA products (a couple from the same line, HEMNES, and a futon with similar mattress) and none of them have smelled like this. He's been coughing and had a runny nose lately, and I'm afraid that's the reason why.

I'm kicking myself for even buying the stupid thing, but I loved the design (slides out for a full bed, storage drawers, both of which are great for our tiny house, 3 sides to keep him from falling out of bed) and of course the price. We bought a nice, "non-toxic" crib, which is being handed down to #2, but when we started looking at the price tag of similar twin daybeds, we just couldn't stomach it. Now I'm wishing we had just bitten the bullet and bought the expensive one, although I didn't actually find something I really liked. Everyone talks about how great their cribs are, but this bed has me second-guessing buying anything from IKEA again, even though it's what fits in our budget. I generally don't buy used beds or similar.

Will this stop smelling? I think it's actually the mattress AND the bed that smell. Is there a way to return these things? It took us the better part of a day to put it together, and we don't have a car big enough to return it assembled. I have emailed IKEA customer service, 3 days ago, and heard nothing back. We, of course, tossed the packaging, as there is no way to take this apart and put it back into the box. We also don't have anywhere to store boxes of that size anyway, and we also had nowhere to put it to "offgas" prior to use. DH started climbing out of the crib, so we had to move him quickly.

This is what we bought:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10272203/#/20272212

I guess if we can't return it we can try and sell it on Craigslist at a bit of a loss, but honestly I'd feel bad about putting this in anyone's home! We were gone on vacation, though left the air on and had someone coming to check on our cat once a day, and our whole house stunk when we returned because of this bed. I read reviews of this before we bought it, and they were good. Maybe if I just got rid of the mattress, the bed would eventually stop smelling? I don't want to expose my kid to this, and I'm pregnant, so feeling real regret at this decision right now.

Tie it to the roof of a car-twine and open windows in rear. Drive it to ikea college park or va -which ever is closer. Home depot has truck rental for about 19/hour. Any friends with large mini vans?

LOL OP here and not sure why this post from 1.5 years ago got bumped. We took it back (we disassembled to the best of our ability) and IKEA accepted it. A little bit of a hassle once we got there, but not too bed. We are very happy with our Land of Nod bed and Beautyrest mattress. No smells!

I was searching for ikea daybed and smells and cane scrosd this post. I have the HEMNES Daybed and experiencing the same smell and after reading this learned that it could be the furniture “off-gassing” or it could be the mattress. I’m so grateful for this entire thread!

We set up the bed on Saturday, today is Thursday and I can still smell the noxious scent. The bed is for my son and I’m concerned if I’m doing any harm to him. Did the original poster get rid of the bed/mattress? Did the smell ever go away? Was your child ok with it?

Beware of toxins from China.

So is it the mattress that’s toxic and I should get rid of or the bed?

IKEA is somewhat liberal about returns, I'd try to exchange it.

Are both made in China?

When I checked, it said “Designer: Ikea of Sweden”

We just bought the Hemnes daybed in grey because I only buy solid wood furniture at IKEA, and it smells lovely - pine.

The mattresses that went with the daybed are the white ones, and they smelled plasticky, as is usual with such material wrapped in plastic, but 3 weeks out the smell as dissipated.

What you describe is unusual and I would return it.
