All they had to do was pick neighborhoods in the 5 mile radius of the new Western High School, redistrict them and call it a day. But they like to waste millions on XYZ consultants or whoever to create a bigger mess and drama. Maybe the school board just loves the drama of this all. Maybe it makes them feel powerful even if it makes them look like fools on every level. This is why you need to study and screen school board member heavily before you cast a vote, otherwise you end up with no value added humans taking up important positions and decisions.

Shame on the entire FCPS school board for your sneaky last minute tactics screwing over EVERYONE. You should all resign immediately. The schools would truly operate better without you.

They did. But RIO fought them tooth and nail with excuses about sports and community. So now the whole county is screwed.

RIO has nothing to do with backfilling Westfield. The location of Skyview severs Westfield’s two population centers. Because of the airport and the business parks there are virtually no students between Rt-50 and the Skyview walk radius within the existing Westfield boundaries. Backfilling Westfield will be controversial regardless of where Crossfield goes to high school. The school is isolated and far from every potential neighborhood. I agree with an earlier poster that they should be looking to move academies from Chantilly to Westfield to better utilize the space.

If they spent all the money they spent on consultants to renovate Chantilly. They would solve the capacity issues.

So true!

No room.

This is a frequently repeated claim. If there was room to expand Justice and Madison (smallest HS campuses in FCPS) there was probably a way to expand Chantilly.

So, Chantilly is pushing 3000. Madison is 2100 (barely over). Justice is under 2200.
Big difference.
Also proves that, if Madison at 2100 is considered fine, then Westfield should also be fine. Put in all of Cub Run and be done with this. There is still construction in that area.

There aren't 300 students in that sliver of Cub Run. Of course, since they won't show numbers, we don't really know.

After seeing the success from Lees Corner, the Cub Run people are for sure stalking Dixit and McDaniel to get a similar promise.

Justice and Madison were expanded to 2500. That's more than Chantilly's current capacity, excluding the 14-unit modular.

They just moved kids to Madison from Marshall, so they plan to increase its enrollment.

So basically what you posted proves nothing about Westfield or Chantilly.

So you think it is better to shift kids to a distant school so they will have 2500 students instead of 2000 or so?

Yes it does. They can fill Skyview with plenty of RIO kids and take less kids out of Westfield and then they don’t need to backfill Westfield at all.

I think it's absurd that there are families at our school more concerned about their kids doing sports or their "property value" than about being able to pick up their kids from activities, having their kids drive safely to high school instead of on narrow windy roads, and staying in a high school that is part of their community instead of a completely different town just because they think it's more prestigious. Gatehouse needs to stop listening to the Crossfield PTO and listen to the rest of the parents in the community. No, we don't have a website, but there are a lot of us, mostly with children in younger grades who play sports in Chantilly and Herndon and want to go to Carson and Skyview because a 5 minute drive makes a lot more sense than a 25 minute drive (which can be 45 during rush hour).

Scenario 2 is bad.

The thing is, your kids are in younger grades. You can almost guarantee that sports, clubs, activities will all be established by the time you get there. I'd have no problem with Skyview if they had done the right thing and established clubs, built fields, established team sports etc first. To the people saying "they'll have them in 2 years." Have you not paid attention? The school board lies and tells you what you want to hear. They mess everything up and nothing gets done on time. I don't even think they've got zoning approval to be a public high school yet, but they'll tell you when permitting and construction will be finished. There's no way they have fields, parking lots, and sports etc in 2 years. So you want our kids to suffer throught it, because yours surely won't

Here it is folks - Rooted in Oakton admitting this is JUST ABOUT THEIR KIDS and not about the long term good of the community. You talk about community and wanting to keep your kids in their community, but here you are fully admitting it's not about community at all. It's all about YOU.

Why is RIO so scared or Skyview?

You mean keep the kids who live across the street from Skyview? The ones who are separated from the rest of Westfield by industrial parks, the airport, and highways? When you have kids who go to the same elementary school who are very close to Westfield?

Its the fact they’re not showing numbers that really effing irks me.

Ironic that their consultants don’t show their work. Failing grade for Reid and the School Board, once again.
