seventh grader A student got a B in the final exam

Anonymous
DC has been an all A student until 6th grade, this year DC got ABBA grades in geometry honors in four quarters respectively. Final is showing as B, no percentage inthe report card for the final exam. What are the choices, should we make DC go another year of geometry to improve grades, DC is very disappointed as these grades will go on high school transcript. GPA is 4, 3.85, 3.85, 4.0 in each quarter of this year, how to calculate final GPA, what exactly will get reported on high school transcript? Advice, suggestions, replies please

I wouldn't worry about it. My DD just finished sixth grade. She's not thinking about high school. I want her to focus on middle school now. In 8th grade she can worry about high school the following year.

If she got 2 As and 2 Bs, maybe she is a B student in math who got did better twice, rather than an A student that did worse.

This. You've got a long road ahead of you if have already set the expectation for straight A's in high school. Might not be a realistic goal.

Oh boy... That child will have a rough summer...

OP - Just have your DD do her best. Not much she can do after that. Good luck.

I'd try to refocus her on caring more about learning the subject thoroughly than what the resulting grade is.

Grades are important, of course, but actually learning something is the real goal, here. Don't lose sight of the long game, here.

You know Geometry A and B are two classes with 2 final grades. Did she get an A on the first final..which would give her a final grade of A for Geometry A? I would not have her sit through all of Geometry again to up the grade for one half of the year unless the B's were very low and you felt she was struggling with the concepts. She is very accelerated in math to be taking geometry in 7th grade. If she is used to straight A's this might be some useful humbling for her..

Email the teacher to find out how your child did on the final exam. My main concern as a parent would be whether the Bs (two quarters and the final exam) reflects understanding and proficiency. Another consideration is that Algebra 2 is supposed to be quite tough and so there is an argument to be made to slow things down a little and have your child repeat Geometry in 8th grade. I agree with some of the posters who have suggested that you not focus so much on having a B on your child's high school transcript.

People make their children retake courses because of B's? Wow.

B's are good grades, people! You can't get a B without understanding the vast majority of what is going on in a class.

Since when did a "B" become a reason to re-take the course. Is grade inflation really that bad?

OP,
There is no reason for a student to start HS with less than a 4.0.

Be careful when your child is doing HS credits in MS, because if they are not getting A's then the truth is that they have not mastered the content. In such a case, why accelerate?

If your child is not getting an overall A in the course, you can drop the entire course by not taking the final exam. It will not show in the transcript.

Ask if that grade can be dropped and what recourse you have.

OP,

Here is how the Semester grade calculated. Semester grade is the one that shows up on HS transcript.

All the best! I am sure that you can get that grade removed, however, I am not sure what the process would be.

If your kid is aiming for one of the top colleges, the GPA matters the most, followed by SAT. Nothing wrong with wanting the best.

Clearly summer school and severe beatings until she stops bringing shame to the family is the only option. Maybe is she spent less time with her tow truck driver boyfriend she could focus on what's important.
