| Sorry. 6 goals and 3 assists in 5 games. Scary numbers. But yeah, I’ll take your word for it that she’s no good, the person who can’t even spell her name. Yawn. |
Easy. Rapinoe Whoever would have to take pks for England. Who is Rapinio? Is she Brazilian? Wouldn’t they spell it Rapinho? |
| Rapinho da Souza do Nascimiento Silva |
Am I the only person who's reminded of the guy who claimed he had the biggest inaugural crowd ever despite the evidence to the contrary? |
DP here. You have to look at the entire performance, not just goals. The good: Rapinoe converted 3 penalty kicks and one free kick, all four of which were earned by other players. Rapinoe scored two goals from the run of play (against Thailand and France). Rapinoe had three assists. Rapinoe had memorable celebrations. Overall, her numbers were similar to Morgan's numbers: the same number of goals and assists. The bad: Rapinoe played no defense and did not track back. This could have been the coaches instructions, but it weakened the team's defense. Rapinoe was a turnover machine when she tried to dribble or pass. This may be expected from a winger to a degree, but it did appear that she was turning the ball at a really high rate. If I were an outside back, I would rather face Rapinoe than someone like Diani, Le Sommer, Heath, Martens, etc. |
Agree. Much less of a chance to get punched by Heather O'Riley or Julie Foudy! |
| A very convincing argument can be made for a few players that they should have been included in the starting lineup. Horan was the NWSL MVP in 2018. Jessica McDonald is a stud and I think would’ve provided more scoring punch up top than Morgan did. Press is another — and she certainly played well against England. |
Fair points, but the prior post with the player ratings for all of the games would seem to rate Rapinoe's entire performance, not just the goals, as one of the best on the team for the entire WC. That is not to say that she couldn't have played better, and does not deserve criticism for aspects of her play. But she was quite good on a team filled with players that proved to be the best of all the other teams. |
| This team should enjoy the victory and celebrate, but they need to get younger and replace some of the aging veterans with younger players. They have 12 players that are 30 or older, which is not sustainable long term. Hopefully 3-4 of them will be replaced with younger players before the Olympics. |
| Teams can only have an 18 person roster for the Olympics, so regardless there will be changes to the WC roster. |
So which five players would you drop? Lloyd, who is 36, will probably retire because she was not happy with her playing time. I would drop Harris (33), Krieger (34), Long (31) and probably Rapinoe (34). These players will be 37, 34, 35, 32, and 35 by the time of the Olympics. Only Rapinoe was a regular starter at the world cup, but she will be one year older and slower. If you really want to keep Rapinoe, I guess it would have to either cut Press (30) or McDonald (31). |

Hurry, let's translate our win into money by any means possible. Forget about the dignity of sport itself, I'm takin' my clothes off for cash, yo.

Seems like you would start Rapinoe over Ellen White, Dzsenifer Marozsán or Kadidiatou Diani. Wonder how Rapinoe would do on those teams? |
How are these ranking determined? The site is just a list of name with a number attached. No explanation as to how the number is generated. |
I'd have to look at prior Olympic rosters, but I'd imagine that they always only take 2 GKs. That takes care of 1 of the 5 spots. I agree with you that maybe they cut Harris (33) and keep Franch (28) as the backup GK for the Olympics, since the latter is more likely to be in the 2023 conversation at GK given her age. To make the numbers work, you'd probably also drop at a minimum 1 forward, 1 MF and 1 defender. "Easy" choices would seem to be McDonald (31), Long (31) and Krieger (34), respectively, at those positions, primarily because of their lack of playing time in France, and the fact that their current age likely means their remaining time on the NT will be short. So that would take care of 4 of the 5 cuts. That leaves the following among the bench players from the 2019 WC roster, with a minimum of 1 cut needed: Defenders: Davidson (20) and Sonnett (25). I'd think Davidson is a lock, given she is really good and also versatile enough to play all 4 positions as a defender. I could also see Sonnett possibly not making the team and some young up-and-comer replacing her, like Emily Fox or Hailie Mace. Plus, if injuries on the back line arise, Ertz can always be dropped back as one of the CBs. MFs: Horan (25) and Brian (26). Horan obviously makes the team over Brian, who like Sonnett may be replaced by another younger MF in the national pool. Andi Sullivan maybe? Forwards: Lloyd (36), Press (30) and Pugh (21). I agree with you that Lloyd is absolutely the most likely person to be the last cut from the Olympic team. She has been amazing, but her time with the NT is over. I'd like to see some of her minutes go to Pugh, but Press is quite good. |
