Women’s World Cup 2019

Sorry. 6 goals and 3 assists in 5 games. Scary numbers. But yeah, I’ll take your word for it that she’s no good, the person who can’t even spell her name. Yawn.

LOL Rapinoe should not be on the field. Seriously she is not of the quality the rest of the team. Do you know much about soccer? Even the political correct 1/2 time show was talking about subs. It’s was Rapinoe they were talking about.

DP. Can you explain further? Perhaps I don’t understand soccer very well, but I’m having a hard time understanding how she said not as good as the rest when she saw one of their leading scorers.

Please if you think Rapinio should be on that field you know nothing about soccer. She is a liability out there and the team had to cover for her. She scored because of the teams around her. Again how did she score the goals? Did she create chances? No. Any time the ball went to her and she was pressured it was a turn over. Press is better. Dunn is better. Seriously talk to a few people who know soccer. You obviously know nothing about soccer.

That is why I asked you to explain it to me. I’m happy to hear the reasons behind your opinion if you care to share them.

She can not take player on 1v1, she turns the ball over when pressured(over 8 turn overs in this game in the final 1/3), she has no pace, she is lazy(does not track back or win the ball), she is out of position, her first touch is bad, the other field players must adjust to cover for her because she is out of position, only one defender is sent when she has the ball, her passes are off in terms of weight, touch and timing, etc. etc. She should not be on the field. Oh but she scored 6 goals( 3 penalty kicks, one lucky free kick). She should not be on the field.

And she scored 6 goals and 3 assists, set up 3 scoring chances in the final, vindicating the coach’s choice that she should be on the field. Your stupidity and bias don’t hold up against her contributions towards winning this World Cup. She was clutch, sorry. Cry about it, go yell it out in public through a megaphone. But she’s a back to back world champion.

LOL. My 12 year old DD and friends said pretty much the same as the pp. They were very disappointed to see her bad play receive awards. I guess you think the place kicker on the Patriots is the reason they win super bowl?

The thing is you guys think every thing you see is so insightful and no one else gets it. Yes we can see when she loses a ball in midfield. And yes at 34, after 3 ACL tears, and with maybe a hamstring issue, the work rate and pace is not what it was. The coach wanted her out there for what she brings in the big moments and she was right. She won the Golden Ball - guess it wasn't based on the every touch video. I know you have learned a lot from watching your little girl play travel soccer - maybe you don't know everything just yet.

+1. I also wonder if any of the people here saying Rapinoe doesn’t belong out there anymore have ever played a team sport in any meaningful way.

Its so funny there are so many defenders of Rapinoe. I guess you all have never watched or played soccer. Glad you turned in for the World Cup. She was bad. Here lets do a little game. Who would you the self appointed soccer experts remove from the starting lineup of Germany, France or England to make room for Rapinio? Should be an easy call.

Easy. Rapinoe Whoever would have to take pks for England.

Who is Rapinio? Is she Brazilian? Wouldn’t they spell it Rapinho?

DP here. You have to look at the entire performance, not just goals. The good: Rapinoe converted 3 penalty kicks and one free kick, all four of which were earned by other players. Rapinoe scored two goals from the run of play (against Thailand and France). Rapinoe had three assists. Rapinoe had memorable celebrations. Overall, her numbers were similar to Morgan's numbers: the same number of goals and assists. The bad: Rapinoe played no defense and did not track back. This could have been the coaches instructions, but it weakened the team's defense. Rapinoe was a turnover machine when she tried to dribble or pass. This may be expected from a winger to a degree, but it did appear that she was turning the ball at a really high rate. If I were an outside back, I would rather face Rapinoe than someone like Diani, Le Sommer, Heath, Martens, etc.

Other than the France game she was pretty damn good. Okay vs France. Had some great moments of individual quality and combination play.

Hope Solo said Lavelle should have gotten the golden ball and that Lavelle was by far the best player in the tournament. She also said Dunn was the second best player in the WC and that Tobin Heath was also up there.

So why does all of the attention go to Morgan, Rapinoe and O'Hara?

Maybe because of the following for each in order: she is attractive with a suspect first touch but quick enough to compensate for it in many situations, she is divisive and angry, and she is a solid player? And, please can Hope Solo just go away?

Solo is not going anywhere, she was a WC analyst for BBC, which had a much better broadcast crew than FOX. I think she was a much better choice as an opinionated former soccer player, than Lalas and she is a lot more entertaining than the boring Heather O'Riley or Julie Foudy.

Agree. Much less of a chance to get punched by Heather O'Riley or Julie Foudy!

A very convincing argument can be made for a few players that they should have been included in the starting lineup. Horan was the NWSL MVP in 2018. Jessica McDonald is a stud and I think would’ve provided more scoring punch up top than Morgan did. Press is another — and she certainly played well against England.

Fair points, but the prior post with the player ratings for all of the games would seem to rate Rapinoe's entire performance, not just the goals, as one of the best on the team for the entire WC. That is not to say that she couldn't have played better, and does not deserve criticism for aspects of her play. But she was quite good on a team filled with players that proved to be the best of all the other teams.

This team should enjoy the victory and celebrate, but they need to get younger and replace some of the aging veterans with younger players. They have 12 players that are 30 or older, which is not sustainable long term. Hopefully 3-4 of them will be replaced with younger players before the Olympics.

Teams can only have an 18 person roster for the Olympics, so regardless there will be changes to the WC roster.

Happy to hear your or other's opinions about Rapinoe, but the following were the player ratings, for the games Rapinoe played, from the BBC's website, which one would think is a neutral source for USWNT player ratings, as well as a sports page and audience that presumably knows a thing or two about soccer. As you will see, Rapinoe was the 2nd highest rated US player for the knockout stages, and was the 4th and 3rd highest in the two Group stage games in which she played, Sweden and Thailand, respectively.

But maybe those Brits "have never watched or played soccer", to quote the PP.

How are these ranking determined? The site is just a list of name with a number attached. No explanation as to how the number is generated.

So which five players would you drop? Lloyd, who is 36, will probably retire because she was not happy with her playing time. I would drop Harris (33), Krieger (34), Long (31) and probably Rapinoe (34). These players will be 37, 34, 35, 32, and 35 by the time of the Olympics. Only Rapinoe was a regular starter at the world cup, but she will be one year older and slower. If you really want to keep Rapinoe, I guess it would have to either cut Press (30) or McDonald (31).

I'd have to look at prior Olympic rosters, but I'd imagine that they always only take 2 GKs. That takes care of 1 of the 5 spots. I agree with you that maybe they cut Harris (33) and keep Franch (28) as the backup GK for the Olympics, since the latter is more likely to be in the 2023 conversation at GK given her age.

To make the numbers work, you'd probably also drop at a minimum 1 forward, 1 MF and 1 defender. "Easy" choices would seem to be McDonald (31), Long (31) and Krieger (34), respectively, at those positions, primarily because of their lack of playing time in France, and the fact that their current age likely means their remaining time on the NT will be short.

So that would take care of 4 of the 5 cuts.

That leaves the following among the bench players from the 2019 WC roster, with a minimum of 1 cut needed:

Defenders: Davidson (20) and Sonnett (25). I'd think Davidson is a lock, given she is really good and also versatile enough to play all 4 positions as a defender. I could also see Sonnett possibly not making the team and some young up-and-comer replacing her, like Emily Fox or Hailie Mace. Plus, if injuries on the back line arise, Ertz can always be dropped back as one of the CBs.

MFs: Horan (25) and Brian (26). Horan obviously makes the team over Brian, who like Sonnett may be replaced by another younger MF in the national pool. Andi Sullivan maybe?

Forwards: Lloyd (36), Press (30) and Pugh (21). I agree with you that Lloyd is absolutely the most likely person to be the last cut from the Olympic team. She has been amazing, but her time with the NT is over. I'd like to see some of her minutes go to Pugh, but Press is quite good.
