It's hard for me (as a Jew living west of the Anacostia) to argue that the most pressing concern Ward 8 residents should have when it comes to who represents them on the Council is whether people think their councilmember is anti-Semitic. Why would this become an issue people are likely to vote on? If White's doing a good job otherwise, I suspect none of this will hurt him politically at all. If he isn't, then that'll be something different.

It's also hard for me, based only on what's been in the newspapers, to endorse the idea that he definitely harbors any hatred or bigotry against Jews. Seems more like he has no idea how his beliefs about things like the Rothschilds are informed by longstanding anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

I thought this article in the Post by a Tablet writer was pretty good.

The "pass" given to White is not only because, hey....it's only about those load-mouth Jews.....it's ALSO because a black man is responsible for it. It's both sad and ironic that a black guy, who of all people should be sensitive to bigotry to specific groups, reveals his own prejudices against another minority, and the DC Council and liberals in general bend over backwards to explain it away. But how would dumping White cost them the black vote? You really think that a white (or Jewish, ha-ha) candidate has a snowball's chance in hell of winning Ward 8? Just put another black guy in, one who can help the community there but is able to hide his bigotry (or better yet, doesn't have any).

I couldn't agree more. The sad thing is that we ALL have implicit biases against people who are not like us, no matter how enlightened we think we are. White vs. black, black vs. asian, asian vs jew, on and on and on. It is disheartening to see it so vividly illustrated as on this thread.
