I never quite understood the appeal of sororities when I was going to college but figured hey whatever floats your boat. The whole drinking culture seemed odd. Hazing. And stories of rampant date rape. Maybe bc I’m not originally from the US? But reading this…I hope my kids avoid it like the plague. I was coming into this thread with an open mind. Like ok-you make connections and contacts. You build friendships. But based on what? Your social media profile? Your parents’ HHI? Your looks? Is this just for the “elite” houses? This is mind boggling… |
And it’s like this at a lot of schools. The older girls who are nice and can afford it pay a penalty to miss it. Even if they like being in the house, they realize rush is an awful experience and don’t want to be a part of it. |
Less douchey? |
I’m literally LMAO. It’s like a bad satire. |
it's mostly super douchy but attracts a certain type of bro |
This is insane. So glad my daughter is not looking at any schools in the South. |
I wish everyone everywhere would be required to wait until second year to rush. First year rush just shouldn't be a thing at all. Give these kids a chance to settle in at college, adjust to being away from home for the first time, and see if they can make friends organically before deciding whether they really want to put themselves through this. |
These poor kids. As if Highschool is not hard enough. Gosh. |
Talk to someone from an SEC school. Your rush was nothing compared to what they went through. |
Agree 100% And if the girls were the priority, they would. But NPC is a money making organization and they want all four years of the dues. Fewer girls would be interested by sophomore year. It’s entirely selfish. |
Yeah, but unlike many schools, UVA is only 30% Greek. And the houses are off campus. You can choose, as my DD did, not to participate to ever go to a frat party. Imagine that! free choice! |
+1 Reading some of these posts they act like someone is putting a gun to every 1st year there to rush. It’s easy to avoid and won’t destroy your college experience like some of these hysterical people are inferring. The Greek culture there isn’t as pervasive as they are making it out to be. There are plenty of clubs that have issues also. In fact, the last two to be reprimanded for hazing are Woman’s Club Gymnastics and the University Guide Service. My kid did not get a bid. His name is Jagdish. |
Are you an alum? |
Hazing by guide service? Making people drink or what did they do? |
