Or alcohol poisoning?

I heard this

Very much hope he is okay.

This is one of my worst fears for my kids particularly son.

Yes. Please pray for this young man.

So scary. Praying for him

I know the details of this situation. I am praying for him and for his poor parents who must be in a type of hell that is hard to fathom.

What are the details?

Yes, they go through the instagrams to figure out if you were popular in high school, which private school you went to, sleepaway camp, etc. Also to see how you dress, your HHI, etc. This 100% happens at every school.

You're wrong, not everyone wants the top 3. My DD went in knowing she wouldn't fit with those girls and knew she'd be dropped, which she of course she was. She did say they were very nice and she was pleasantly surprised by them. But it is absolutely about wealth and connections in those sororities and at UVA those girls come from boarding schools in the Northeast. If you are not already known to them before rush, you're probably not getting in, even if you're a legacy.

UVA is slowly changing. While Greek life will be somewhat important, it won't be as important as it once was. UVA is getting kids from different backgrounds even out of state kids.

LOL. Just because UVA is trying to rewrite its extensive history, doesn't mean it is succeeding at doing so. Greek Life will always be synonymous with UVA.

A rush committee who has already decided who is attending? Absolutely not. Yield protection? Not a term I’ve heard before. Top tiers everyone is talking about? Totally different from when I went there, and I wouldn’t have ever referred to them that way. We just tried to find girls we clicked with and would want to hang out with, it was not any deeper than that. And we certainly didn’t care where you were from or what vacations you took! Give me a break.

its pretty not cool, but the "tiers" exist because of the fraternities. I wish they could be required to mix with all of the sororities but of course that would not work so the top mixes with the top, middle mixes with middle and low mixes with low. That's why no girls want to be low, even if they might like those girls and the sisterhood because they perceive that the guys they will be mixing with are "less than". Less good looking, less charming, less eligible, who the heck knows.

Less douchey?

LOL. Yes, this. OML this whole environment is so toxic. Why are parents getting involved, and/or encouraging any of this? Isn't the point of going to college to actually grow up and become your own person? Not compete for bought friendships? This is mind blowing. The whole message being sent to women is that they are not good enough to get to their destination on their own. Instead, the idea is put into their head to buy fake "friendships", for fake "connections". And moms are okay with this?? To what extremes??

if you pay dues to join any club or sport are you "paying for friends"? My kids are both greek because I was and it was the best part of my college experience. They both have held exec positions and have had a great time. They are not in "top houses" so they just have a solid, nice group of friends and neither has experienced any hazing. Neither really drink either. My DD does not drink really at all, and my DS drinks maybe 1 time per week, maybe. The dues they pay allow for their house to gather, fundraising and social events. Those things cost money. I have definitely seen and heard some things that I do not like in these "top houses" for example, the most recent issue. That doesn't mean that kids don't have a perfectly safe, happy experience in other chapters.

I heard he hit his head- is a pledge and was stripped down already to his underwear? I heard he is or was in a coma. Any updates on this poor kid? My heart is so sad for him.

Until the truth is actually determined, one should not convey rumors and gossip, especially about a young man fighting for his life. My DD knows people in this fraternity and they very much disagree with what you just said. The truth will come out, no need to trade in gossip and rumor.

Oh please. UVA is only 26 percent greek unlike some schools like Wash & Lee which is 76% greek. My UVA kid went the entire 4 years without ever setting foot in a greek house or attending a greek party. Nor did his friends. Your can too! It's entirely off campus. Imagine that! Free will!

That's still too much influence. If you don't want Greek Culture, look for U's with less than that. Less matters.

People are concerned about him. It is not gossip. They are also concerned about that being their kid if their kid decides to accept admission offer to this school and wants to rush and pledge. It is relevant.

Sorry, you are wrong. It's gossip and you are all doing it. People are dying all around you today - and you could be of some help - but instead you are twisting and turning over one incident of alcohol poisoning several weeks ago at UVA! Get a life!

Anonymous wrote:Get used to it. There are always people who won’t say publicly but they think of the Greek houses in tiers. I believe there’s a website that even ranks them by school.

From my uva days, the top sororities were kkg, tri delt, theta, and pi phi. Doubt it’s changed much. Fraternities had a similar pecking order.

How (and why) do you remember that!

I’m pretty sure anyone who went to a Greek dominated school would remember these details. I certainly remember that that top sororities at wake forest in 1999 were KKG, Chi O and Pi Phi. It’s not an insignificant detail of college if you go to a big greek school.

Yep.
Northwestern: Tri Delt; KKG; Theta; DG; Pi Phi
