Would be great if these fools can be forced to share on demand (for a fee of course) how an application was reviewed, all the notes associated with it, etc. so they can decide if they were assessed fairly. You can't because the opposite is true. Most AOs I have met work hard and genuinely care and try to do a good job based on their given institutional preferences, despite being underpaid. You don't like them, and I won't make the same mistake as you and speculate why.

My kids go to McLean HS and you CANNOT reach a 4.6 without taking as many AP classes as you can fit into your schedule. That means most of your core classes have to be APs. Sure there is some leeway so that you can take AP Envir Sci instead of AP Chem but you cannot skip out on many of the hard APs in your core classes and reach a gpa as high as 4.6. With a gpa of 4.6, you have to assume the rigor is there.

So 4 years of rigor and intense focus are there, on the record. And yet:

You are making no sense. UVA doesn't yield protect. SCHEV shows the 75th percentile has a 4.5, 35 AT or 1520 SAT in THE MOST RIGOROUS courses, which is how they have a 4.53. That's how you get in to UVA. It doesn't need to yield protect with 53,000 applications and, as a public, it doesn't have the resources to devote to yield protection

There's enough out there (google) about temps being hired to review college admissions applications. There was a thread on that not too long ago.

Either way, you never answered my simple question "How do AOs (even the non-temps) divine someone's 'lack of passion, lack of empathy' or determine 'what sort of human' a child is"?

As for yield protection, it does happen at UVA AND Virginia Tech. Not officially, but know enough kids who got into much better schools over the past 3 years that didn't make it into these two - same common app essay, similar good responses to individual questions and with stats above the cutoffs at both schools. Just parroting the party line doesn't change reality. Anecdotal? yes..but enough anecdotes become data and data over time shows trend. I've seen it.

Don't really give a S whether you agree or not, but for awareness of parents with kids who may apply to these schools in the future.

These are true, no doubt. But it doesn't explain the trend this year where SO MANY high stats kids landed lower than would have been expected based on (recent!) history from their own high schools.

Colleges don’t only want kids from wealthy suburban high schools anymore.

Agreed completely. Very apparent this year - a marked shift. Yet many on DCUM fail to believe it (choosing instead to point fingers or find fault). Heed the warning flares people....be prepared.

The Instagram College Decisions pages from these high schools tell a different story.

This happened to my son applying to the engineering program years ago (36 ACT), but we're from Maryland. They were actually correct...he wouldn't have gone there if accepted. I doubt very much this truly happened to a VA resident for yield protection reasons. This has to be a troll.

Actually I saw so many minority students when touring UVA. It definitely wasn’t close to looking all white. And Whites are 57% of the US population. Black people make up 20% of Virginia’s population, and 7% of UVA’s. And white people make up 52% of UVA’s population. What is your point?
