This comment hurts my head so much!! It screams white male privilege. Colleges don’t have to SAY the majority is white. People can see for themselves. The years of discrimination in this elite institution where even women weren’t permitted initially, is being challenged and opportunities opening up for ALL, not just those who thru legacy or nepotism get a free pass.

Actually I saw so many minority students when touring UVA. It definitely wasn’t close to looking all white. And Whites are 57% of the US population. You would be very hard pressed to find a college campus that mirrors US demographics. And World demo does not matter—u see grads are predominantly US citizens/residents.

Black people make up 20% of Virginia’s population, and 7% of UVA’s. And white people make up 52% of UVA’s population. What is your point?

Well I suppose if you wish there were none, even a handful will seem like a lot.

There are fewer black students in the class admitted last year than were in the class admitted in 2009.

If you tell the lie enough people cant tell the difference.

The “multi race” was either 0 or close to it in 2009 in the chart. Is it possible that wasn’t an option to check then? That would explain the different. It rises considerably on the chart.

DC is African American and taking the most rigorous classes with all As so far as a sophomore. I've been casually looking at schools and U Pitt and U Delaware are over 65% white. I think both would be good likely schools, but not sure if they will be a good fit due to lack of diversity. Again, I've only looked casually, but I'm not sure the bolded about finding a campus that mirrors US white demographics is true.

Why? If you kid is all As with a rigorous schedule, aim higher! I understand the 'percentage of population' angle (there was another thread on HBCUs) but just on potential stats alone, he should be aiming at UVA level schools and above.

McLean isn't a typical FCPS school. Part of holistic admissions is viewing the applicant in light of their school. As you implied, a 4.6 in McLean is more common than a 4.6 in FCPS

Does your DC prefer to make friends with other AA students? If so, consider the black common app. Also, think about ways to help him stand out beyond just taking the most rigorous classes. What are his academic interests?

It really isn’t. My kid is at McLean and probably has something close to a 4.6 (a touch lower maybe?). They are among a very small group of kids in that cohort of GPA. I obviously don’t know everyone but most of the kids that have that type of GPA are in at very good schools. We had an amazing year. 3 at Harvard. 3 at Yale (I think). 1 to MIT. Also well represented are Duke, Brown, Chicago, other Ivies etc. A very high number to UVA and W&M. And shocker. Most of the Harvard and Yale kids are white or Asian. I am sure there are amazing kids at McLean and everywhere that didn’t make it into these schools. And it is a total shame. But really it’s not because of TO or first gens or whatever. It’s just luck of the draw.

It really isn’t. My kid is at McLean High and probably has something close to a 4.6 (a touch lower maybe?). They are among a very small group of kids in that cohort of GPA. PP here. My kid is also at McLean and I can confirm this. My post calculated that achieving a 4.6 weighted average would require maxing out on all possible APs for math, sciences, social sciences, English and foreign language. FCPS does not allow taking APs before 10th grade, and not all AP courses are offered. Other NoVa school districts have different practices. Thus, getting a 4.6 weighted GPA is pretty close to the absolute maximum (and yes, I know about dual enrollment but there aren't too many FCPS kids doing this).

I can also confirm what this PP reported regarding commitments, based on what my DC showed me from Instagram.

Now is there some "puck luck" (to use a hockey term)? Sure. We know of a McLean kid who is at Gonzaga who was rejected by UVA but is headed to Princeton.

irrelevant. It's the percentage of AA students applying in each class. The best are snapped up by Ivies and Slacs. its a surprisingly small number.

Yes, DC will aim high. I was thinking about safety schools that would work if not admitted like OP's son.

THIS is what TO and yield protection does. Anyone who claims otherwise is full of it

I guess your kid should have applied ED and shown the school that they would actually come there if accepted. Oh well.

UMI and UNC don't have ED. Kid had 35 ACT, 4.81 weighted, forget UW, courses with rigor, 1w APs and the rest honors except where required (PE). National Merit Scholar. Varsity Sport and excellent ECs/leadership. Summer job for many years with increasing responsibility. Visited. Followed. Went when they visited the high school and asked questions. Also visited virtually.

White male, full pay.

Deferred and then rejected from UMI and rejected outright from UNC.

Why are you grousing about this on a thread about UVA / VT then? And you do know that MI and NC are extremely competitive, right? Your kid is a dime a dozen among their applicants. Move on.

Because we all know what is happening. white and asian high stats kids can't get into top publics anymore. That is what is being unsaid

Um, nope!

+1
My white high stats kid and all her white and Asian friends were admitted to top publics this year.

DC has friends from different cultures and races. Making friends isn't a concern. They have said they want diversity so I started paying closer attention to those numbers. No HBCUs on the list yet, but again DC is a sophomore so too soon to have a final list.

Huh? Have you seen the UVA instagram class of 2027 pages? Mostly Asian and White girls are posting.

Exactly - that is only who is POSTING.

You’re right. It’s all a conspiracy. They bar all the non whites and Asians from posting. I also know for a fact that many of those posting do not actually exist. The data is doctored as well. Even if it shows the school is mostly white and Asian they’re manipulating it.

And when you’re on campus , they’ve hired actors to walk around campus and attend classes so you think it’s all white and Asian students.

But we all know better.

The absurdity of the PP knows no bounds.

DP. It's really just one poster who keeps coming here to complain because her very special soon didn't get in to UVA and VT and so had to go to NOVA and transfer. Like hundreds of other students.
