McLean sends a lot of kids to UVA every year and this year will be no different.

Each high school can only send so many kids. Colleges denied this for years, but in recent years this fact was conceded. Also, McLean happens to be a very diverse high school - not all rich white kids, contrary to some people's belief. UVA is looking for a diverse entering class, so this is what is happening. Seemingly perfect candidates are left with private college choices.

Anti Rich bent plus Yield Protection possibly. My kid is at Cornell applied EA to UVA and deferred then rejected RD. Also got into a top 5 SLAC and some other good places. In at W&M as well. Went to top area private.

OP, did he send test scores?

This is a big part of it. Grades and class rank are not the package. No one can say if he was a strong applicant. Did he: work, take rigorous classes, have leadership and community service, how were the essays, varied and long term ECs, etc.

I mean if someone was up there in a room full of URMs saying 'the majority of our incoming are white (with a huge smile-isn't that great!!) there would be outrage and lawsuits...oh wait...dope!*

This comment hurts my head so much!! It screams white male privilege. Colleges don’t have to SAY the majority is white. People can see for themselves. The years of discrimination in this elite institution where even women weren’t permitted initially, is being challenged and opportunities opening up for ALL, not just those who thru legacy or nepotism get a free pass.

Actually I saw so many minority students when touring UVA. It definitely wasn’t close to looking all white. And Whites are 57% of the US population. You would be very hard pressed to find a college campus that mirrors US demographics. And World demo does not matter—u see grads are predominantly US citizens/residents.

I weep at night for rich kids from McLean going to college with no student loans.

With just a GPA and gender, I’m toning to say white or Asian, applied to the school of engineering and maintained GOA at the expense of BC Calc and AP Physics C (or did and didn’t get As) and/or did not take top classes from all 5 core subjects (ir skipped AP foreign language, AP Lang and Lit, AP World, APUSH.

You can get the same 1.0 bump for AP Physics 1 and APES and AP Physics C. Or AP HUG and APUSH. But these are not same rigor.

UVA wants all 5 core and has a very small engineering department. VT wants As in BC Calc and Physics C. I’m guessing OP’s kid didn’t meet these requirements.

I’m also guessing OPs kid is high on the BT waitlist and will see movement in May.
Am I close?

I also heard that it is very tough for McLean boys this year. But overall is not too bad this year. Harvard admitted 3, Yale admitted a crew boy, MIT admitted an Asian boy, another top 5 school admitted two twin girls

There are at least 3 kids going to Yale.

Yield protection isn't real

Plenty of donut hole families that will have to pay $80 (many loans) for each kid. In-state tuition is a biggie. $320k for each kid is a huge 4-year college ask.

Schools try to create a student population that more adequately represents the world on a global scale, not just a historically white male dominated educational institution.

A simple check of the school stats disproves your entire narrative. Why would you come here and make things up? It’s not helpful. UVA’s undergraduate pop is 52% white and 18% Asian.

This is why it's not a bad idea to transfer to a lower performing high school out in the sticks.

Me here looking at all the white boys on my kids’ NoVa HS class Instagram announcing that they will attend UVA next year…rolling my eyes.

Nonsense.

Visit the college campus. You'll see the numbers.

Very few students of color, especially blacks and Hispanics.
