Here’s an earlier thread with a link. The conduct of the School Board was embarrassing: even if you didn’t conclude some were anti-Asian and racist, you might still conclude they were unprincipled and deeply incompetent. The only way these people could ever be re-elected is if there are enough people who just blindly vote for candidates endorsed by the Democrats (in which case they fully deserve four more years of FCPS decline):

https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1028206.page

I agree the board acted deplorably; nevertheless, with a 59% share of TJ seats I can't take these claims seriously.

That’s because you likely look at Asian students as some monolithic group to be treated (or, depending on your perspective, mistreated) collectively, whether their ancestry is Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Afghan, etc, rather than as individuals to be evaluated on their individual merits.

Brabrand and the School Board decided there were too many Asian kids at TJ, as a group, and not enough Blacks or Hispanics, as groups, and then tried to engineer an ostensibly race-blind change in the admissions process to alter the school’s racial demographics. The fact that they may not fully achieve their goals, or that they may delay their full implementation for strategic purpose, doesn’t mean their motives may not be examined or may not serve as the basis for a court to conclude they violated the Constitution. While it may take years for the litigation to be resolved, they likely will not fare well if the case makes it to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court already had a chance to halt the admissions process. There’s no guarantee they’ll even grant certiorari if it comes up again.

It would also be moot if the VDOE intervenes before a cert petition is filed and rehauls the requirements for Governor’s Schools. FCPS has to seek redesignation of TJ as a Governor’s School every year and there’s no guarantee the state will keep approving FCPS’s requests.

There is a false sense of confidence among the Fairfax County progressives that they have this issue locked up. You will hear of how Fairfax county is 70% democrat and the court review is in essence done and do on.

The same overconfidence brought in Youngkin to the dismay of many.

As the PP has rightly pointed out, the Dominion of Virginia can always step in.

This issue has much of the Asian community engaged and there will be much higher Asian turnout in the next election. It will be a shocker if the school board gets re-elected. Maybe a couple but that is it.

As a card carrying liberal left-wing member, FCPS managed to change my mind into voting for Youngkin in the last election.

I want reform to TJ and share many of the goals that FCPS supposedly espouses. The corrupt, racist, incompetent and politically motivated way they made changes to admissions in the middle of a pandemic turned me off.

If this is what progressives stand for, I would choose even Trump over them.

If you were any of that you'd never vote for a Trumper like Youngkin. He's pro-gun and anti-woman's rights. There are bigger issues than TJ and trying to convince people otherwise seems exactly what a right-wing operative would do. The changes to admission even were very reasonable and allowed students at the less affluent schools a fair chance. If anything it favored the naturally gifted over the prepped, but many parents resent having their ability to game admissions diminished.

I have voted for democrats for 38 years as an Asian American but fcps and all the discrimination in college admissions turned me into an independent who will punish democrats by never voting for democrats again.

Ok. Don’t take them seriously. I don’t think anyone is appealing to you in any case.

The rational majority will speak when the next elections happen.

I suspect that you are going to be sorely disappointed. I would vote for a moderate Republican but the Republicans that end up running are anything but Moderate and will not receive the votes of the majority of the people in this region.

That said, the school board behaved poorly.

And I don’t have a problem with the changes as they stand. I think that guaranteeing seats to every MS is a good call. I prefer using metrics that every student can meet, ie classes and grades from MS and not extra curricular activities that not all kids have access to is fine. I do wish they would increase the GPA to 3.75, include all classes and not just the core classes, and require kids have Geometry before completing 8th grade.

The reality is that increasing the number of URM is going to decrease the number of Asian kids at TJ because the Asian kids are highly overrepresented at TJ.

Maybe they should also increase the number of Sophmores and Juniors who are allowed to transfer into TJ. Perhaps a summer class to make up for whatever it was that they missed would be required?

It’s despicable to say Asian kids are over-represented at TJ. It’s no different than saying Jewish people are over-represented at the Treasury Department. You are disgusting and should be ashamed of yourself.

And if any group is over-representatives it’s women on the School Board and hopefully many will be removed soon.

It's not despicable. It's basic mathematics. Over-represented is not a value judgment.

College educated people are over represented in federal jobs. We should do something about it. Not everyone has the ability or desire to go to college. Penalizing them would be inequitable.

Coalition-aligned folks major in drawing comparisons where there are none.

Jobs are not the same as educational opportunities. Nor are places on sports teams.

Seriously, eat sh*t. TJAAG-aligned folks are about nothing so much as ensuring TJ remains at the center of attention in FCPS. They don't care one iota about educational opportunities for anyone other than the 3% of FCPS high school students who attend TJ, but they want to make sure there's a rainbow coalition at TJ because it makes them feel better about having attended an elitist, exclusionary school.

Or you could try to make a point. But good on you for acknowledging that TJ has been elitist and exclusionary. We agree there.

Yes, the new process helped reduce it a little but still many groups are shut out of participating in a publicly funded program that should be open to everyone. If this can't be addressed fairly, then they should shut it down.

No they aren't because any group that takes over half the pie isn't being discriminated against. This is just common sense.

Just wait until you're the one lumped into the group that it's now OK to discriminate against.

The TJ Alumni Action Group is a revolting group of agitators, many White and in their 30s and 40s now, and who still view having attended TJ as the most important thing that ever happened to them. All they care about is making sure it's still a cool thing to have on their resumes and doesn't lose any of its clout among their left-wing friends and employers because it has "too many" Asian students.

Yes, sure, the changes doubled the number of URM and gave many low-income students opportunities that they were previously denied, but overall it's had little to no impact on anything. I read this thread as a few parents jockeying for an advantage at the expense of the public.

I disagree. So . . . we are back at square 1. Ration scare resources equitable across everything or don't, but why do you think we should listen to what you think is comparable and what isn't?

Because TJ is not a resource - it's an opportunity.

Actually the reformers are pork barrel politicians who want racial quotas - it is pretty obvious from the gerrymandering of the TJ admissions process. Twist and turn the admissions process so that you can get the outcome you want without calling out race. Much like gerrymandering.

I agree the board acted deplorably; nevertheless, with a 59% share of TJ seats I can't take these claims seriously.

True but the coalition folks aren't very bright and just don't care about anything beyond their own interests.

Yes, the coalition folks are pretty awful. They want an admission policy that allows them to buy entry.

Actually the reformers are pork barrel politicians who want racial quotas - it is pretty obvious from the gerrymandering of the TJ admissions process. Twist and turn the admissions process so that you can get the outcome you want without calling out race. Much like gerrymandering.

And the school board rammed the changes through during the lockdown period without community feedbacks. They knew they had to do it in a shady way because they knew they were doing something shady.

Didn't realize this was just about a scam but I get it now.

Yes, sure, the changes doubled the number of URM and gave many low-income students opportunities that they were previously denied, but overall it's had little to no impact on anything. I read this thread as a few parents jockeying for an advantage at the expense of the public.

That sounds like an improvement.
