(CNN)Two men who opened fire outside a contest for Prophet Mohammed cartoons in a Dallas suburb were shot dead by police Sunday night, authorities said.

The men drove up to the Culwell Event Center in North Garland, got out of their car and began shooting just as the "Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest" inside was coming to an end, Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said. [...] The event was sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, which is considered an anti-Muslim group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups.

The group said it specifically picked the venue, a public school-owned facility, because it was host to a event denouncing Islamophobia in January.

This is sad that this was done with the intent to cause the exact reaction it has. Michelle Malkin called a newspaper "cowards" after blacking out the offensive art.

And to those that want to restrict guns

Well then we should totally excuse the actions of the gunmen. Poor guys, being baited like that.

My understanding is it was done to promote the peaceful exercise of free speech - the two wishing to stop that added the exclamation point that discussion of certain topics is under attack.

No this is just more of the politically correct conservative hate speech.

For those who unfamiliar with Pamela Geller, she was in the news a few weeks ago for sponsoring an ad campaign across major U.S. cities with anti-Muslim posters saying, among other things, “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah.”

On Sunday, she was in the news again for sponsoring a “Jihad Watch Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest” in Garland, Tex., some 20 miles from Dallas, after which two men opened fire on a security guard before being shot and killed by police. Authorities did not immediately link the exhibit and the shootings, but Geller did, with vehemence.

[Gunmen shot dead in Texas after opening fire outside prophet Muhammad cartoon show]

But Geller had drawn national attention long before these events. In 2009, she became a leader of the movement against a mosque in Manhattan. She told the New York Times she believes the only “moderate Muslim is a secular Muslim” and that when Muslims “pray five times a day … they’re cursing Christians and Jews five times a day.”

I live really close to this - about 15 minutes.

#1. Super impressed by the off-duty police. It made me feel good that they shot and killed the suspects so quickly.

#2. You know, wherever you live, it just goes to show there are these people who are seriously unhinged. My life is pretty awesome, and it's really easy for me to forget that in the house across the street or in line next to me at Target might be someone who is planning to do something bad to me and my family.

One of the suspects was "Well known by the FBI" and under investigation for terrorism. Name is Elton Simpson. I don't know what "kind" of terrorism, just skimming the news reports this morning, but sounds like an off-kilter guy looking for a reason to create havoc.

I also am on the fence about if it makes me more comfortable with the level of concealed carry/guns there are in this area. I'm not a TX native, by the way, and in many ways not the "Texas stereotype" - although we really love living here. I think ultimately, I am more comfortable knowing that it's likely people around me are armed if a situation like this arises. I know in reality that actually probably makes the situation more dangerous, more likely to get accidentally shot, but something about knowing not only the bad guys have guns just sits right with me. FWIW, I do not carry.

I am not condoning the gunmen showing up to shoot up the place, but this is the height of cultural and religous insenstivity.

Not only is there a "contest" to draw the prophet with everyone knowing full well the angst it causes among Muslims, but you have this "event" in a part of Texas that has substantial population of Somali Muslims. What did people expect to happen?

Agreed. Two bad guys got killed, and about a few hundred families learned that it is proper to taunt other religions, just because it is your legal right.

Yeah, same thing on Broadway with The Book of Mormon. Those shootings were horrendous! What did people expect??

There are so many things wrong with this story.

$10,000 prize for best caricature of Mohammed? And what the hell is an "Anti-Islam" group?

And the gunmen ended up shooting a poor security guard.

+1000. I feel the same way. I know "concealed carry" was mostly banned or impossible in almost every state during the 60s and 70s when I grew up.

Today, it's possible to get a government-issued permit in every single state and even DC to carry personal protection.

But out of a nation of 310,000,000 people, you just do not hear of significant problems; sure - there was Zimmerman - that's ONE (1) person out of 310 million. Even if there are a few other cases, there is no proof it's a statistically significant issue. It just isn't.

Absolutely. In this country, we are allowed to be provocative, disrespectful jerks.
