Mom is scared of spanking b/c CPS. This video is insane.

Totally insane. It was so dehumanizing for that child. But why is the family filing a lawsuit when the mom was just as big of a creep as the cops?

Money. I think mom set it up so she could sue.

The actions of the officers in this video directly highlight why they, at a very minimum, need specific training in child development if they interact with kids, but I’d argue that moreover it shows why they should have absolutely no role in school discipline. The cop goes so far to say to the mom, who had just finished talking about how their family is struggling and the Dad is working 2 jobs, 60+ hours per week, etc etc, that the kid needs more discipline and not therapy. That child likely was already dealing with trauma and now is even further traumatized because of this. This video is appalling because it’s a 5 year old, but even if this were a 15 year old, no one should be told as made in that they should be beaten. Just no.

She set what up? For her child to be absolutely traumatized for an hour?

She said she was fine with spanking, not beating and took the kids cloth off to prove she wasn't harming him. The entire thing was weird.

She mentioned having an older child and made it seem like she had gotten in trouble before. She probably was terrified that the cops would hold her accountable for something... that’s why she wanted to document she hadn’t harmed her kid.

Clearly both she and her son need help and support...

My kid is like this. When I saw the video I vividly remember my sons tantrums and inability to self regulate. At 5, most kids are just starting to get SN dx. It is around this time that the professionals agree that the behavior is outside normal ranges and can no longer be soley attributed to toddler/preschool tantrums.

I understand how the mom feels. I felt thst way about my son many times. The intensiity of life with a child who is that out of control and cannot hear or talk in the moment is unbelievable. It is relentless. Every day you walk on eggshells in fear of setting the child off.

I’ll admit this on an anonymous forum—I’ve screamed in my child’s face like the officer. Even knowing how my son behaved and how I felt, it still shocked me. Not that it really makes a difference but a non parent does not have the right to treat a child like that. A parent doesn’t either but when you live with hours long tantrums every day for years it’s hard to always stay in control. I would tell myself that yelling was better than hitting.

With training and education, the mom can learn strategies to de-escalate her son. For my son, it was silent car rides. The same ones you would do with a newborn. My son is 12 now and he still will ask to go for a quiet drive if he needs help regulating.

As I write this I’m aware of my privilege. I’m aware that I have mental health insurance and by 5 my son had a neuropsych and was in play therapy. DH and I were in parenting training to learn how to manage our son. The mom is going to need a lot of help raising her son and I hope she is able to get it.

What the officers did was horrible. They could not have been with the kid for more than a few hours. Yes it’s frustrating but as officers of the law they need to tune it out and treat him as a small child.

What I find interesting is that PEP is located at ESS. Those teachers are trained in deescalation. Why did no one ask them to come help the child. Given his age I also wonder if the child was in PEP or in K.

I agree, once the child was returned to school, it was no longer a police matter. This was a five year old boy.

Watching the video made me sick. How could police behave in that manner to a child? The police officers should be fired and training on basic human decency skills for how to work with members of the community.

Then there were the MCPS employees. Why they didn’t step in and help the child? Why didn’t they ask the police to leave? Disgusting.

Finally, as a mom, I have sympathy for the child’s mom given the situation. She was called to the school because her child ran away from the school staff who was supposed to be watching him only to become the one interrogated by the police. She clearly seemed overwhelmed. The school system should be working with her, the boy, and the school staff to come up with strategies to deescalate when he looses control. Bring in a specialist in behavioral intervention strategies.

I hope the boy gets the help that he needs. For police to threaten and yell at him like that probably was very traumatizing.

Mom is just as complicit. Her only reason for not beating her child is fear of going to jail or losing her child to the system. Otherwise, she’s okay with it?

Did the school previously report her to CPS?

Yes, it sounds like she had reports. Mom needs parenting help.

Given her behavior I don't think she cared at all about that child's needs.

Why is the police officer transporting the child without a proper car seat?

A child hits another with a clipboard.
A child grabs another by the hair and slams their head.
A child hits the teacher.
A child breaks a $1000 computer.
A child leaves school property.
An officer of the law gets in that child’s face and screams at them and taunts them.
An officer of the law tells a child they are bad and encourages mom to whoop that child.
An officer of the law test drives a pair of handcuffs on a five year old.
A mom tells officers and a staff member she can’t beat her child because she’ll lose custody or go to jail but otherwise would.
A mom is suing the MCPD after joking around and smiling at the end of this debacle...

And you are concerned that a five and 1/2 year old is drive 2 blocks without a seatbelt? GMAFB!

Where is the school counselor working with him to calm down and deescalate the situation?

Its all bad news. There was much more said than that. Those cops should be fired. That mom should get CPS in home help given the behavior of the child and mandated counseling.

Why is the adult in the room/who ever she is not talking to the child helping him calm down and guide him through the situation? The police scream at the kid but don't engage them and act like fools. The other adult is not helping the child either.

You forgot where mom strips the kid to show officers.
All the inappropriate conversations in front of the kid. Joking and laughing instead of talking to the child appropriately about behavior. They can call the kid bad but can't talk to the child about appropriate behavior. Get down on his level and talk to him calmly.
The name calling by the officers.
Those staff seem horrible. No wonder the kid is running.
Mom has no clue how to parent. She buys him toys then has them throw it away. She spanks and bribes but not work with him on behavior.
The police counseling was inappropriate. They have nothing to offer.
Mother calling kid retarded and other stuff. How she spoke to her child was just as terrible. The all three fed into each other.
No one is teaching this kid deescalation and alternatives to anger and frustration and how to get needs met. No one is listening to him, just yelling.
Mom knows he needs a therapist, didn't get him therapy and saying he doesn't need it.
Mom blaming the school and they are clearly part of the problem but he needs a different school environment.
Mom is just as bad, if not worse as she should have taken her child and left.
Mom is rambling about her and her beliefs.

No one is talking about the child or the child's needs or talking to the child to help figure out what is going on.
This child has SN - he only drinks pedisure and only recently started with chicken nuggets. She should have gotten him evaluated and feeding help as at 5, that's not normal. Pickly is normal, that is not.

Zero reason for Mom to sue as she acted the same way.

I hope if anything comes from this video is that MANY kids have needs outside of a parent scope and MANY families have needs that they can not financially receive. Lower class or struggling middle class do not have medical insurance. Do not have the money. Do not have the time. Many are truly single parents (no dropping off with other parent on weekends etc...) and many parents have untreated mental health issues as well.

It is just so sad that the top 1% of our society are so disgusting, controlling, and selfish that wages are so low for others. That our government can not see that basic health care and helping people out of poverty are human rights. We look at other countries with severe poverty and controlling governments and think our country has freedom. It is a joke. We are puppets.
