Please. Like that mattered. No, they’ve been too busy with their own Thunderdome on another thread. Something about walkzones ( natch!) , ASFS, and terrorists at their PTA meetings. It’s less interesting than it sounds.

With the exception of Randolph, I don't think this is true.

Yes I think if zones across the county are drawn east west and around walk zone then done in one direction east you could really mix it up. Draw McKinley into BarcroftBarrett and tip of Carlin Springs. Ashlawn into to Barcroft. Make Barcroft option. Drew takes some from Abingdon and all the way down and around to Arlington Ridge. The Board could go the right thing. I am not sure they will... of course Discivery, Tuckahoe, Reed, Jamestown are really hard to deal with based on geography unless they make Reed an option school.

I'm in SA and really have no desire to make a bunch of NA schools with farms rates less than 5 or 10 percent participate. Those schools have residents with the time and resources to scuttle the whole thing over something minor.

What i’m suggesting is that all of South Arlington draws a line.

No school shall have a free reduced lunch receiving population exceeding 50%. It’s unacceptable to have schools with those numbers and truly an embarrassment in a progressive county. Pick a study. Just about any study and it will tell how counterproductive it is to concentrate poverty.
That might mean Oakridge, HB, and Fleet’s percentages rise closer to 50. I think percentages in the 40’s won’t tank those schools, and it’s worthy to give all of our schools a fair chance of success.
It also means that Barret, Ashlawn, and Long Branch have to be part of the solution.

It’s not surprising to me that some parents are only hearing, “ you want to tank MY school”. That’s not what I’m suggesting, but the numbers are going to have to go up everywhere if we want improvement across the board, and it’s not realistic to expect APS to bus kids back and forth from Jamestown.

Yes, I support the policy of no school over 50%. I do NOT support making every school in south arlington 50% in order to make that happen. I do NOT support making 35% schools 50% in order to make that happen.

If a school is already 47%, for example, then fine - make it 50% if it means a 60-80% comes down to 50%, AND you make sure that 50% doesn't somehow creep up to 51, 52, 53, then suddenly 60.

I'm in Nauck and my goals are to suggest improvements that stand a chance of happening. I've no interest in "tanking" Oakridge or Fleet, but it's pretty clear to me that without purposely keeping the AH currently zoned to those schools this this fall, they will both have farms rates under 20 percent within a couple years if it gets shoved off onto Drew. I'm not interested in turning those schools into "north" Arlington schools at the cost of creating another barcroft, carlin springs, or Randolph at Drew.

DP- that’s fine, but you can’t just be concerned about Drew. We need to be looking at creating change at Barcroft, Randolph, and Carlin Springs as well. We can’t all just retreat to our corners and protect “what’s ours”.

The only way to bring more diversity N is to make one of the schools like Discovery or Jamestown an option school. No walkzone/contiguous zone is going to help. Ashlwan/McK/Reed/Glebe will all have some diversity built into neighborhoods..

I’m not interested in bringing unwanted diversity to north north Arlington. Although I think a choice school inl the NW with a min amount reserved for ED students should be part of the solution .

I'll skip being offended by your comment and point out that bussing Barcroft apt students to 4 or 5 different elementaries is a nonstarter and probably the only way to meaningfully bring down the farms rate at Randolph. I'm sorry I don't have a better suggestion but I can't say progresss everywhere or progresss nowhere. I'm open to suggestions about how to better balance the other schools. Drew will be solidly title i in any scenario I can imagine, so im not trying advocate for it at the expense of neighboring schools.
