Adams was not the worst mayor. He takes crime seriously. His "city of yes" plan is actually good for housing (while freezing rent in rent stabilized apartments is a useless populist move). He promoted phonics and got rid of balanced literacy in public schools. He rolled out trash collateralizatoin and appointed a very competent "rats czar".

I did not agree with some of his moves and obviously he is corrupt but I have to admit he has been a decent mayor in comparison to most of the alternatives.

The reading curriculum change is happening basically everywhere, Connecticut passed a law on it a couple of years ago to (and dragged a bunch of Gold Coast districts away from Calkins kicking and screaming).

That said I was hoping his announcement yesterday was that he was dropping out. Those who don’t want Mamdani will be split between 3 and then we are screwed.

This is what it boils down to with endorsements; neither Heastie nor Schumer nor Jeffries wants to be involved in elevating somebody who's going to support primary challenges to their members, however much those members might deserve them.

Next year's primary cycle is going to be *incredibly* ugly and I expect Mamdani will be a leading figure in elevating new voices in the party. This is good and necessary, but the existing members are not going to take it well.

Great article - thanks for sharing. This explains why many of us are hesitant about Mamdani. It isn't all about Israel. It is a lot of other issues. Heastie is a lifelong Democrat - no one can accuse him of being MAGA. But he can see the forest for the trees. I have posted many times here trying to explain my hesitations with Mamdani and this article does it really well.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are stuck with Mamdani as the other candidates are awful. But hopefully he will listen to what others are saying and stop trying to be a revolutionary.
