Waitlist movement

Anonymous
While schools like Northwestern and Dartmouth have said they will keep the WL open through June, but not likely to move further (or at all in D case) unless international acceptances deteriorate.

The bolded, is this just your personal guess about Northwestern, or have you heard something from admissions? Northwestern said the waitlist would be open through June but didn't say more than that in their reconfirmation request.

Most colleges have not closed their waitlists.

As for it being June, it's only been June for a few minutes. Let's see what happens this week.

Last year- almost all were closed by 6/1. Most of the movement was mid-May.

That is not accurate. While movement decreases from May to June, most closed end of June. And this year there has been more movement for certain schools, which almost certainly will not close before the end of June.

The International visa issue is a thing.

Exactly. Waitlists will need to be kept in reserve until they know whether the international students are going to get their visas in time.

Is there a good CC thread on open waitlists?

Yes, the thread linked in the post just after your post.

NP:
Dartmouth hasn't gone to WL at all this year. Our counselor called and they said they don't expect to unless forced to due to international withdrawals.

And, Northwestern has gone to the WL a LOT already (several from our private have gotten in from WL); our counselor said they aren't expected to pull further unless their total #s start to drop.

Our school counselor said there will be movement into July and August this year.

UMich did a wave of waitlist acceptances late on Friday, with an enrollment deadline of June 8. What is unknown is whether that was the entirety of the wave, as sometimes UMich waves take a few days to get all their offers out.

Middlebury moved this past Friday (5/30) as did Wash U, Michigan, UCLA, Brown and more. Most of them give a 7-10 day turn-around so there will be more movement as kids shift from other schools.

Oh and Vanderbilt did too. I know a local kid and there were several who posted on Reddit.

Middlebury hasn’t gone to a WL in a few years.

Not true. Last year they took 45, with 36 the year before and 12 the year before that.

At this point it would be full pay to Northwestern if one was to come off the waitlist right? Yuck! I also imagine most of these kids on the waitlist have already selected a darn good school to attend.

DP. Most wouldn't stay on the waitlist if they preferred the school where they're enrolled over Northwestern.

Not sure what you are asking about full pay- students admitted off the waitlist wooild receive financial aid, just as they would if admitted RD. What is a different question is whether the waitlist is need-aware at Northwestern, as it is at most too schools, such that an applicant's financial need may be considered in light of the available remaining financial aid budget at that particular point in time.

My full pay kid would be happy to attend Northwestern should he get admitted off the waitlist

I guess it all depends on what the other option they’ve already accepted.
