Many of us do not believe that a child wearing a mask is being robbed of a childhood. Dr. Wen points out that her son's language development has been harmed by mask wearing. If your kids' development has not been harmed by wearing masks, your risk assessment will differ.

And most people do believe it robs kids of childhood. Not being able to see people's facial expressions for going on three years is too much for kids. Not being able to hear your teacher or friends is problematic when it is constant. Not being able to breathe all day is horrible. I never put my kid in the KN95 nor do I wear one unless i know I am near someone with covid. For one of my kids, I can't even find one that fits properly, so it's a joke when she does wear it.

There are companies that make them for kids and have easily found one. You simply don’t want. It “robs” you.

PP here. Nope. I ordered all types in kid sizes. KF94, KN95, M95. Not worked and left big gaps. My daughter has a tiny heart shaped face. If you have any suggestions, I am open to them.

Bona Fide masks.

Thanks, but as I mentioned above, the KN95 smaller masks don't work. The shape is not good for her heart shaped face. She has a VERY narrow chin. The closest one that works is the M95 and even that I have to staple the mask to tighten it. We just do regular 3 ply masks for the most part now because it is more comfortable and probably is just as effective as the ill fitting 5 ply masks. BTW she hasn't gotten covid yet and she only masks when mandated.

I believe you PP- my cousin who works in a hospital was supposed to work in the Covid ward earlier in the pandemic but couldn't because he could not be properly fitted with an N95. Very narrow angular face. There are likely a lot of people walking around with ill-fitting masks who don't understand how useless that makes them.

Mask harm involves more than potential speech issues.

Masks are disgusting!! Especially in ES and MS where the kids are gross anyway and our MS rarely has soap in the bathrooms.

No thank you. We’ll pass on the masks.

I haven't read all 32 pages of this, but...

To OP's subject line question, the answer is not only no, but Hell No.

The end.

These were from pre-Omicron, so not really relevant anymore.

Don’t research what’s on the inside of your underwear all day long. Or your tampon.

Those aren't really relevant to what I am breathing all day...

No, this up to date, even if you want to pretend otherwise.

This is what all the right-wing nuts do these days.

Good advice. I won't wear used underwear over my mouth.

And that’s why I’m glad the schools will be ‘Masks Optional’ and not ‘Masks Required’.

Some of us are nervous about catching Covid. Some of us have already had Covid and are fine going without masks.

Every family can choose what works best for them.

Two out of four of my family have already had Covid. My kids will be masking this fall (and are this summer, at indoor summer camps) because we want the other two family members to be protected. Also--you can get it more than once. The BA.5 variant easily avoids immunity from vaccination and prior infection. Sadly, even my infection in June isn't worth anything now. I'm no longer concerned anyone in my household will be seriously ill (thanks, vaccines!) but shutting everything down for up to 10 days was s no joke and I want to avoid doing that again if we can. When I had Covid, I tested positive for 9 days, even though I felt fine by day 4. That's a long time to be off work or school.

There's no longer a 10 day quarantine period, so if you don't have symptoms on day 5 you can go back to work/school and wear a mask. Or if you test negative you're free to go about your life as if you didn't have covid.

Try a comparison to swabs of people's faces.

Anonymous wrote:Does anyone else think Leana Wen changed her tune when things started to actually effect her own kid?

Did you read what she wrote? She was willing to sequester her child(ren) for a time, but not indefinitely. That was my main takeaway, and it’s not unlike the thinking of many other educated parents. The scenario we face now is very different from April 2020, i.e., COVID is more mild and more contagious, so avoiding it is much more difficult, on top of the 2+ years of social isolation and restrictions society has faced.

MoCo/MCPS had some of the strongest restrictions for the longest amount of time in the entire country. It’s worth examining the trade-offs of that approach; it’s also reasonable to adapt as circumstances evolve.

Also, no, our kids aren’t wearing masks.

Stop spreading misinformation! Although covid is 6+ times more contagious than the original variant, it is not milder. Yes, there is greater immunity which helps but there are large numbers of people being hospitalized, and don't even get me started on the long haul side-effects...

Yes, it is milder. The proportion of people hospitalized with covid is much lower than originally - due to various factors, but the overall impact is the same. Again, you have to consider the big picture here (how hard is it to avoid getting covid? How sick will you get? How long have you been isolated? Etc). It’s not just all covid, all the time.
