Elon Musk buys $3 billion stake (9.2%) in Twitter and is now the platform's largest shareholder

Is this guy stupid or trolling? Why did he not buy the #1 for much much less?

He clarified this in a subsequent Tweet:

Because Twitter was censoring conservative content due to rules it was not applying to liberal content (Hunter laptop vs. p tape for example), this led to apps like Parler and Truth Social, which are going to further radicalize people in isolated echo chambers and turn people even further to the right. For some reason Elon sees this obvious point but some of you are not that astute.

Does Musk even identify with one party? Making the Twitter code more or less open source would allow users to see for themselves whether a posting is from a bot or not. Wouldn’t discussions be more democratic if the people have open info and decide for themselves rather than someone (or an AI) deciding what is good or bad. Some “good” actions have unintended consequences. A lot of censoring right now seems like it has the same effect as trying to keep a lid on a boiling pot.

I think the vast number of normals leaving the platform and the vast numbers of fascists joining it tells you all you need to know. And yes, since he’s a dishonest sack of crap who loves the far right, he’s a right winger.

Sad because if the idiots on one side leave and only the idiots on the other side stay, no one is actually fighting the good fight. Each side will bubble wrap themselves and make more of their own cocoons. Democracy ends in dark silence through censorship and book banning.

There’s no fight to be had. You have millions who are living in an alternate reality. They can’t be educated. They love their ignorance.

Twitter will become what Truth Social tried and failed to be.

It will be interesting to see what this does to twitter’s ad revenue.

Taylor Swift's twitter follower #'s: lost ~10k followers out of ~90Million. That's roughly 1/100th of 1% of her total followers. Though she seems to have been losing followers in the previous weeks. Don't follow her so I have no idea why.

Katy Perrys: lost ~5k followers out of 110Million. That's less than 1/200th of 1% of her total followers.
https://socialblade.com/twitter/user/katyperry

Like so many things, it depends on what one's definition of "significant numbers of followers" is. It's possible that Katy Perry will de-activate her Twitter account that's she's had for 13+ years and leave over that loss but the data seems to suggest that these mega stars will be able to handle losing 5 or 10k followers. And the people that unfollowed will likely be back anyway. Let's be honest here...

Katy Perry lost 200,000 followers, not 5,000.

She still has 110 million followers. In the grand scheme of things, that’s a blip on the radar.

Do you also think it’s nothing that Marjorie Taylor Greene picked up 95k followers?

As for Perry, Swift, etc., it is a dramatic swing for two days. The level of deactivations and new account creation was high enough that it got Twitters attention and they felt it was worth analyzing. So you can keep trying to minimize it, but it is still a sign that a lot of people are very uneasy about the idea of participating in a platform run by Musk and giving him access to their personal data.

A bunch of republicans joined due to the news of Elon taking over and wanting free speech. It makes sense to me. I think Tucker Carlson even came back.

Yes, because they think that Twitter will now let them engage in the kind of indecent, hateful behavior that wasn’t tolerated the past few years.

I mean, the awful, racist, misogynistic and violent tweets at Vijaya Gadde that started moments after Musk went after her yesterday tell us we need to know about what Twitter will be if Musk has his way.

Yah - No wonder Twitter staff are upset … already Twitter’s moral voice of reason is under siege by Musk and conservatives …

Twitter’s top lawyer reassures staff, cries during meeting about Musk takeover
Vijaya Gadde, a key executive involved in decisions to remove former President Donald Trump and ban political advertising, expressed uncertainty about the future of the platform.

Gadde, who has worked at Twitter since 2011, is the key executive charged with overseeing Twitter’s trust and safety, legal and public policy functions. She is seen internally as Twitter’s “moral authority” and the executive tasked with handling sensitive issues like harassment and dangerous speech.
Gadde played a leading role in negotiating the deal between Twitter and Musk, according to one person familiar with the dynamics.

I guess she should have done her job in a more even-handed manner. Clearly if ISIS is allowed on but Trump isn’t? Problem

QFT. Anybody who thinks it's bad that she's gone doesn't truly believe in Democracy. This is good for all parties and the left will come to see that. Right wing racists should not be allowed to target "black twitter". Transphobes should leave the LGBTQ+ folks alone and if they get out of line they should be banned. Most of the right just wants a fair platform.

She ruled with a leftist iron fist. Buh Bye!

Once again the USG needs to either seize Twitter as a public utility or at the minimum appoint an oversight board to ensure the firm does not traffic in lies or extremism.

Neither of those things will happen.

Are you familiar with the First Amendment? The government can't censor the media, not even through a third party.

Twitter stock down today and still trading 10% below the acquisition price = the market is not very confident the deal will go through.

Maybe it’s time. More democratic countries in Europe protect their citizens through policing the web and other forms of media. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t move into the 21st Century.

The US government can just appoint oversight boards of companies now?

The First Amendment is why. European countries don’t have it. Again, you should familiarize yourself with it.

Won’t happen.

The US has been flushing itself down the toilet ever since the Fairness Doctrine was revoked.

In many European countries Mein Kamph is banned. It is required reading in many US political science courses.

DP. Can you link to the article? I thought he secured funding days ago so not clear why this would be news today unless something about his financing has changed.
