DP: because they are older and better-known. |
And over the next 4 years, as those older players retire or get moved to substitute roles (like Lloyd this year), you will see the marketing energy turned towards the next generation of players like Lavelle, Pugh, Horan, etc. This is fine, and the USWNT has done a great job of "passing the torch" since the 99ers. |
I agree |
Correct. It is the marketing cycle. Lavelle (along with Horan, Mewis, and Pugh) will be THE star in 2023, if she is not injured. I predict WS will sell her rights to a Euro club (for $$$) and she'll play there, become a bigger star and then return to NWSL (or whatever the US pro league may be by then) in 2022 or 2023. Most of the 2019 team will be retired from US competition next time, so the next wave comes into the limelight. In the meantime, my focus goes over to watching the men's team try to improve so that when they make the 2022 WC they do reasonably well (get out of group and maybe win a round of 16 match). |
| Great job Coach Ellis! A transplanted local from Robinson and William & Mary. |
Agreed. And we WILL need that new generation to keep winning the next Cups now that other countries are stepping up. |
| Lavelle best player on the team hands down. Waiting for Pugh to get to the next level. Older players need to be replaced soon.... |
|
"Lavelle (along with Horan, Mewis, and Pugh) will be THE star in 2023, if she is not injured."
That's a big if. She's already had a lot of hamstring issues, and those tend to snowball as you get older. Really hope she can stay healthy. |
Of course they need to be replaced in time, but they deliver as-is. Contrast that to men's side... |
As was posted on the other WC thread, the USWNT did a great job replacing the older players from the 2015 team with younger players on the 2019 team. The 2015 team included players like Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, Christine Rampone, Heather O'Reilly, Lauren Holiday, Shannon Boxx, Meghan Klingebberg, etc., all of whom either retired or did not make the 2019 roster. In addition, key starters from the 2015 team like Carly Lloyd, Ali Krieger, Morgan Brian, etc. were transitioned out of the starting lineup and into reserve roles on the 2019 team. That is a lot of players who were replaced over the last 4 years, and the USWNT did a great job integrating their replacements into the 2019 team. As for the future, there is already a good core of players from the 2019 team who should still be quite good by the 2023 WC: Ertz (27), Mewis (26), Dahlkemper (26), Dunn (26), Horan (25), Lavelle (24), Pugh (21) and Davidson (20). |
Talent will never be in doubt but when do we acknowledge that our talent should also be matched with a more sophisticated style of play? When do we as a nation decide that we can do more and do it better tactically at younger ages? I love our athleticism but I would also love if we could begin to create an identity through a style of play in the future. |

The quicker US Soccer can make Lavelle, Ertz, Mewis, Dahlkemper (who was rock solid in the finals), Horan, Pugh, and Davidson the face of the team, the better. Alex Morgan as well, who remains a national treasure and will surely be around for another 4 years. O'Hara, too.
Lloyd and Rapinoe have had a nice run, but it is time to exit asap, and preferably during the victory lap tour that is sure to come. I have big-time Rapinoe fatigue, and I'm not looking forward to her inevitable spot as a commentator either. Too bad Tobin Heath decided not to shoot on 1v1. She could have finished the final like a rock star and propelled the US to an easy 5-0 win. Same with Dunn, who shot to the keeper from 6 yards out with no defender in sight. Pick a corner and pass it there already. I've seen better from local U16s. |
| Ertz was our best and most consistent player by far. Morgan and Rapinoe get a lot of the plaudits because they had 12 goals and 6 assists between the two. That’s 18 out of our 26 goals (69%). |
+1. I think she’s done a lot to bring casual fans into the game. We may not be obsessive die-yards, but we’ll watch games, buy our kids jerseys, etc. |
No Lavelle is the best player. Watch what happens when she leaves the game during the US v England. The whole game changes. |
