I think they have, and have compared the one-time cost of the swap to the annual cost savings of more efficient transportation. |
Which ones? Not ASFS or Key. |

wrong - that's the whole problem with this study is is woefully inadequate accounting for common spaces such as cafeterias all page 54 does is explain to you how APS does not adhere to best practices for 2.5 seatings as recommended by VDOE |
You're misrepresenting that a bit. The recommendation from VDOE (which is provided in the context of how big a cafeteria should be in planning the construction of a new school) is that three servings makes best use of a cafeteria, but that a 2.5 factor should be used for a continuous service program. A continuous service program is one where people are continually coming in and out and may stay for indeterminate periods of time, which happens more in high school and makes it harder to predict how many students may be in the cafeteria at a given time (e.g., a student has a free period that isn't designated as "lunch" but that they still might use to hang out in the cafeteria with their friends, or they have two free periods back to back so they go to the cafeteria to eat halfway through the first and then stay until the end of the second). Elementary schools generally don't function that way, students come in and out in defined serving periods without overlap, so 3 is an appropriate factor to use. |
Well, obviously the Superintendent specified the swap would happen in 2-3 years (2020/2021), so yes it will be put on hold. A lot can happen in those 3 years, so they will focus on So Arl now and maintain the status quo for Key/ASFS for the next 3 years. |
| Did you all see the memo from the school board to Murphy about the upcoming budget process? It was very clear that there can be nothing discretionary in the budget. It specifically says, "No new, major initiatives should be presented." That's basically the end of revisiting the option location review because that initiative was closed. Key and ASFS can be swapped because the resulting transportation cost savings will quickly outweigh the cost of relocating the programs, but you'll be hard pressed to make the same case for moving an option program to Nottingham or something, especially when you include all of the costs that would go into even evaluating it, such as traffic studies. |
+1 I love how all these posters scream "fake news" or "it didn't happen" when we talk about what APS or Murphy has said, released, or done that doesn't favor them but when someone says there will be a swap, the same posters are like, "oh yeah, that's a done deal" or "Murphy said it, it's happening." If there is ANYTHING we should all know by now is that APS and Murphy say A LOT of stuff and change positions quite often. We have at least two more years before anything is going to happen at the Key or ASFS buildings so everyone should just sit back and enjoy these threads for the next two to three years. And to bring the PP poster up to speed, APS said that it will move ASFS to Key, including the science lab. But APS only (originally) budgeted $44K for the move (or 10 boxes per classroom). ASFS claims that all their personal stuff is worth at least a half a million dollars and will likely cost way more than $44K to move or recreate. No idea if Key has anything special that needs to be moved. |
Yup they do -- bilingual education has it's own stuff too. Their entire library of books in Spanish for example will need to move. Way more than 10 boxes sad to say. We all know Science Focus thinks the world revolves around them but turns out there's a whole big world out there and our tax dollars are not funding your fancy "stuff" |
Why not make it Spanish & Science Focus? It will become the crown jewel of Arlington, everyone will want to be in that lottery. |

Maybe it’s just not worth moving either of them. What exactly is wrong with the current setup?
|
Boundaries and excessive transportation costs. |
It has been discussed extensively in this thread and in the staff's memo. If you are still incapable of understanding it after all of that, perhaps your ignorance is beyond something we can help you with. |
NP. Yes boundaries are odd. What is the actual problem with a school outside it’s zone? FCC has a school outside it’s CITY LIMITS for years and it’s okay. There are more buses going to ASFS that many schools (maybe all?) so exactly how expensive is that. |
What's actually wrong with the boundaries? How much is the "excessive" transportation costs? |
