Gorgeous 38 yr old doctor, mom of 3 found dead in NYC building lobby

Would DCUM have this same amount of sympathy for poor, unattractive people on welfare who overdose in a bad neighborhood? What about someone in a trailer park in WVA who overdoses on meth? Would DCUM have 30 pages of how tragic their death is?

Doubtful.

In a way, her actions were worse than the poor person in the bad neighborhood or the person in the trailer park who overdoses. Why? Because they have little hope of things in their lives getting better. But she has it all (beauty, a successful career, a family), and she still threw it all away.

I agree with you. Take that recent video of the little boy being told his mother died of a heroin overdose. It's heart wrenching and tragic but mainly your thoughts of sympathy go to the boy, not the mom who chose to use heroin and overdosed. I highly doubt people are feeling bad for her. The only difference between her and this case is she was poor and probably didn't have a whole lot going for her.

And you apparently don't seem to understand that willfully doing something stupid (like using drugs) is a bad mistake with completely foreseeable bad results for yourself. Nothing good was going to come of that night. She chose to self harm which is terribly sad.

Can we all agree that she made a mistake and have empathy for her?

No. Take your love of Becky elsewhere. In this thread, white women do bear responsibility for their actions.

Awful, irresponsible, drug-using narcissist died in an awful, irresponsible, drug-related way. Good riddance.

Tragedy?

Hardly a tragedy when a coke whore dies.

Ugh. Stop with the white vs. black thing already! It's getting so frickin' tired. Maybe this person is just asking that a human being have sympathy for another human being who died. You don't know this poster. You don't that she would only feel empathy for white people. Stop being so damn close minded and obsessed with race!

I wouldn't have put it the way that the PP did, but I agree that if this story had been about a woman of color, the articles would not be "doctor, wife, and mother" first and "drug addict who overdosed" second. If it made the news at all, which I doubt would happen, it would be able a drug addict who overdosed who also happened to be a doctor, wife, and mother. Let's not forget that a couple days ago, a black doctor on an airport was instructed by a flight attendant to sit down while they found a "real" doctor to respond to an emergency.

I disagree. If it were a black woman with this woman's pedigree, the descriptions would have been the same. The airline thing, while horrific, is irrelevant.

Um ok. I'm sorry that happened to that AA doctor the other day on the plane. That doesn't have anything to do with what I was talking about though. One flight attendant on a plane does not represent everyone in America. Do you know how many poor white people die of heroin overdoses everyday and there is no mention anywhere? If this successful dermatologist with 3 kids, a physician husband from Westchester County had been coking it up with a shady HBO producer friend and she happened to be black instead of white, it would've made national news just like this did. The formula for headlines is not black vs. white it's money & status vs none.

I completely disagree that the coverage would've been the same. When young white women are abducted, it's national news. When young black girls go missing, it isn't. This is actually fairly well documented in social science. Crimes against women of color do not receive as much attention as crimes against white women, and the OP started this thread with a comment about how pretty this woman was, what her profession was, and her status as a mom. If the woman had not been a gorgeous white woman, I doubt the OP would have posted it at all.

Missing white woman syndrome involves UPPER MIDDLE CLASS white women, not all white women. So yeah, if you're arguing that, then yes, this case fits but there are plenty of poor white women who go missing and get no media coverage. That also doesn't mean that affluent people of color don't get any media attention, because they do.

Uh oh. I seem to have pissed off meth-mouth Brittney Ann. Are you upset at the possibility people won't mourn you one day when you finally go too far and are found face- and panties down in your own vomit?

Why? Is it because your too blinded by your white privilege to confront the truth?
