I wouldn't have put it the way that the PP did, but I agree that if this story had been about a woman of color, the articles would not be "doctor, wife, and mother" first and "drug addict who overdosed" second. If it made the news at all, which I doubt would happen, it would be able a drug addict who overdosed who also happened to be a doctor, wife, and mother. Let's not forget that a couple days ago, a black doctor on an airport was instructed by a flight attendant to sit down while they found a "real" doctor to respond to an emergency.

Um ok. I'm sorry that happened to that AA doctor the other day on the plane. That doesn't have anything to do with what I was talking about though. One flight attendant on a plane does not represent everyone in America. Do you know how many poor white people die of heroin overdoses everyday and there is no mention anywhere? If this successful dermatologist with 3 kids, a physician husband from Westchester County had been coking it up with a shady HBO producer friend and she happened to be black instead of white, it would've made national news just like this did. The formula for headlines is not black vs. white it's money & status vs none.

I completely disagree that the coverage would've been the same. When young white women are abducted, it's national news. When young black girls go missing, it isn't. This is actually fairly well documented in social science. Crimes against women of color do not receive as much attention as crimes against white women, and the OP started this thread with a comment about how pretty this woman was, what her profession was, and her status as a mom. If the woman had not been a gorgeous white woman, I doubt the OP would have posted it at all.
