Weather forecasting has greatly improved in the last 25 years. And even if it didn't start tonight, we couldn't be sure it wouldn't start during the school day tomorrow. They had to close. But they shouldn't celebate.

Why not celebrate? The kids are all celebrating. That’s what it is about. Embrace your inner child.

Think of the parents scrambling because they still have to work but now don't have child care. Or the kids with special needs that are going to miss out services, likely for several days.

Yes, this closure is necessary. And yes, NT kids will celebrate. But adults shouldn't. Thousands are being impacted negatively by this.

Please grow so very much up.

Do you frequently celebrate when bad things happen to others? That's a pretty sociopathic behavior.

See above.

So yes? Have you been diagnosed yet? Therapy may be able to help before you do something drastic.

You are wildly unintelligent. Get some help for your screeching anxiety STAT.

I'll take anxiety over sociopathy.

You are so, so, very dramatic. God help you when you ever encounter a real problem.

I ask because no stores seem to be open today and my medical appointment for tomorrow afternoon was canceled because the doctor wants his staff to stay safe.

My wife had to start her shift at the hospital today. I'm sure she'll be working tomorrow.

I don't think anyone suggested the closure today was inappropriate. At least in Germantown/Boyds, it seems like they conceivably could have opened tomorrow, but I'm not going to fault them for closing.

I think people are livid that thia could play out like last year where they extend the closure through Wednesday, which would be ridiculous.

And I think people are mad that MCPS has a horrible track record when it comes to make-up days.

I also wish that there could be some separation where some schools could open with others still working towards it….

But most MCPS employees don’t work at schools in the same neighborhood where they live, and schools can’t open without being staffed. Furthermore, if almost all students are expected to walk, sidewalks will need to be safe, which means you’re relying even more on the citizens of MoCo to clear and/or salt the sidewalks abutting their properties. I don’t know about you, but I definitely have neighbors who don’t adhere to snow removal ordinances.

I'm sorry, but some of you need to adjust your threshold over sidewalk "safety." Get your kids some boots and tell them to walk slow if needed. There are pleny of kids all over the northern parts of th US that trudge to the bus stop/school on icy sidewalks all winter long. And YES, I know that some of these places have sidewalk plows (I grew up in one of them) but honestly the plows just remove the top bits and then the lower layer ices over. Unless you truly scrape down to pavement and there's no daily melt/refreeze from adjacent areas, it's just the way it is.

You are wasting your (incessant) keystrokes. Schools will close no matter how much you complain. Cope.

For how long? Until kids can walk on dry sidewalks in sneakers all the way to school?

You’re so dramatic.

You want kids to fall and break their ankles/wrists? Ice is dangerous. Get a grip.

Maybe we should just shut it all down until spring. You can't be too careful. You don't mind working through the summer, right?

Your hysteria is fun to watch.

We don’t get quality either. The state sets the 180 rule. Our hs teachers sent out emails with assignments due tomorrow. Kids should get credit.

You had teachers email today with work that must be completed on a snow day?

DP - yes, my kids are in HS. I remember reading all these fights about storms over the years and didn’t really understand how much pressure is on HS kids until I had one.

It’s a snow day. Not virtual. I would send those emails to their principal

I'm the poster. I have NO issue with a teacher sending work. With AP classes, they need to stay on schedule as they have the AP exams. I would have prefered virtual with real teaching but this is why kids don't learn anything - no homework, no accountability and parents who don't care.

I changed my kid's tutoring for today and they have homework to do assigned today.

I think most people here understand today's closure. Many also get why tomorrow will be closed. But they should be able to open on Wednesday, yet they probably won't. Hopefully the childcare providers will be allowed to open on Wednesday.

It is not just that people have to work. As someone else mentioned, kids with disabilities are not getting services while schools are closed. For us it meant a big delay in something my kid really needed because of the availability of the psychologist. I wasn't angry (that was a necessary closure) but please stop pretending this doesn't really affect anyone. Nearly half of MCPS students receive FARMS - do you really think their parents still get paid when they have to take off work?

If you truly can’t handle any disruption, then you need to lobby for higher wages for school staff so they can afford to live in the county. Do you want to pay custodians higher wages so that their day starts at 5 am year round? No one is going to bend themselves into a pretzel because you are having a hissy fit.

What a sad life you must live

DP, but no, that honor goes to the parents having massive temper tantrums about freaking snow days.

At least a 2 hour delay.

There is no delay for more than 2 hours. It's either a 2 hour delay or a closure.

That…is what they meant.

We have people complaining that the school is closed, that there is not virtual option, and kids are missing a day of school work. And we have people complaining that teachers emails work assignments to students on a snow day—“contact the principal” someone suggested.

DCUM posters never fail to disappoint.

The consensus from parents seems to be that schools should quickly schedule a meaningful make-up day that occurs as soon as possible.

We'll likely find out tomorrow that this is an issue. Most people here seem to agree it is unlikely that MCPS will open on Wednesday. It is entirely appropriate to begin discussing how we're going to deal with that.

Who is “we?” You’re so much less important than you think you are.

No reason to wait until then. Then next scheduled make-up day is Jan 29. The one after that is March 31.

We should enact the 29th day so March 31 is available for the next snow.

Those are days for end of term grading.

DP. So? If they are listed as make-up days it is ok to use them. If teachers don’t want to list that, they should work with their union to have more snow days added into the calendar.

Clearly not a teacher.

The end of the term is often when the workload is the heaviest. It’s important to actually give teachers time during the work day to process grades.

Teachers are tired of the expectation that our nights and weekends belong to our job. Schools cannot function on teachers’ willingness to be martyrs.

Then why didn't you complain when it was identified a make-up day. Your union apparently thought it was an acceptable option then.

For maximum opportunities to whine and complain

After 23 pages of parents whining, wailing and complaining on this thread, oh, that is rich.

Because it’s not about learning. It’s about the maximum number of days, hours and minutes the district can warehouse their kids for them.

I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

The earlier makeup days are 1/29 and 3/31.

1/29 is too early to be used as a makeup days. 3/31 is Eid al-Fitr. Let’s not take away the Muslim holiday again.

1/29 is plenty far away. The Board could approve it this week.

Keep dreaming.

Says someone whose kids obviously doesn't get special education services or subsidized food at school.

Quantity matters too.

Blah blah blah. Get a new song. This one is old and stale.

Really? OK, try getting a consensus on when the make up day should be. It is always the same. People complaining that the way things are being done is wrong, but so solutions offered.
