To be honest her plagiarism hasn't seemed that bad to me. She has copied without attribution, but not really to the point where it looks like she was passing off other people's work as her own. In a vacuum I would have been, whatever. But I think it's clearly more egregious than what Gay did, which was (apparently) omit quotation marks when the citation was included in the text.

I think Ackman's crusade is what it appears to be. He's mad about university administration not standing up to anti-semitism in the wake of the Hamas attack and the Israeli counterattack. My sympathies incline that way, too; when some right wing flak gets kicked off Facebook or whatever for inciting violence or otherwise breaking the rules, progressives are usually quick to say that private companies should enforce their rules of discussion. Gay and the others were unwilling to stand by their universities' rules of student conduct, and that was bad. But Ackman is willing to be a lying hypocrite to get at them by any means necessary, and that's also scummy. I'm pretty sure he didn't care about plagiarism this time last year, and I don't believe he cares now. It's just mean-spirited grandstanding, and I'm sure we'll see more of it from a different angle of attack in the next few weeks or months.

I quite agree with this. I’m not going to read either dissertation or the style standards that each was expected to use. The issues that have been raised recently, do have me wondering about different style standards, the differences in researching and writing dissertations and other research projects pre- internet and now, and also have me wondering about the different ways that dissertations might get assessed and reviewed prior to being accepted by their universities.

Back when I did a dissertation — pre-1995, I had stacks of index cards, scrawled notes, and piles of xeroxed articles to work from. Very different from being able to copy and paste, while easily retaining screen shots of the original books and articles.
Using AI or even some rudimentary program to assess the consistency of citation styles, or even a spellcheck program able to accommodate academic topics was not an available option for me. Students with money could pay a knowledgeable department secretary to type their final copies — which included editing and adherence to standards of style — what some of these accusations of “plagiarism “ actually seem to be. Students without ready cash typed their own, struggling as best we could with unfamiliar style directives and punctuation, and, for the most part, lacked the advantages afforded by experienced editing.

I’m not excusing sloppiness — although I am acknowledging that sloppiness, especially pre-internet sloppiness is a very different thing from passing off someone else’s ideas as one’s own. I also think that if pre-internet and even pre-computer research gets examined with today’s technology, we’ll see quite a bit that today would be questioned, and, at least given second looks.

I do have some thoughts on Ackman, his apparent motives, and the fallout from his actions. I’ll save those for another post.

Huh, I was in grad school in the mid aughts and it was explicitly drilled into our heads that Wikipedia is never to be utilized as a reliable source. I didn’t go to MIT though we had higher standards I suppose.
