Why are OOS flagships so popular these days?

When people buy cars, some want a fast car, some a roomy car, some a car that’s good in deep snow, some an inexpensive car. In other words, not everyone has the same priorities when it comes to picking a car, & nobody freaks out when a person buys a 7-seat SUV instead of a 2-seat sports car.

But when it comes to colleges, some people need CPR if someone deviates from the USNews rankings or decides to go out of state. As a great man once said, “There’s a reason they make chocolate AND vanilla.”

Honestly I don’t believe this really happened. Unless PSU threw money at them.

PSU dons't throw money at anyone. No merit whatsoever. My kid loved PSU and its school spirit. He didn't like UVA or being close to home in Georgetown. My other son loved Texas and the city of Austin.I am happy for them. What is so hard to believe?

Nope. Sorry. Didn’t happen.

Well, we know he didn’t just apply to UVA, GT and PSU. We know there’s more of a story than that.

And we also know that very, very few kids are going to be accepted to those three schools alone and pick PSU.

How do you know this?

I think the first shot fired is as early as page ONE:

“You are going to OOS public instead of in state UVA because you didn't get into UVA.“

The UVA fans might not realize it but their confidence in statements like this is nauseating. I mean who are you to make a statement like that? The 13th grade stuff (which I did not take part in & don’t agree with) came after repeated insults like this.

Im the PP. Both kids had roughly the same GPA and both had 36 ACT scores.

It may be hard for you to believe, but my kids did not want to go to UVA or Georgetown. They both applied to 10 OOS flagships. Both were rejected from Michigan and UNC. Among those schools they were accepted, Texas and PSU were their favorites.

Not wanting to attend Georgetown is easy to believe. But applying when you don't want to attend makes no sense. It's not a quick or easy app.

Did they go to private school in DC?

But here’s the thing: poster after poster admitted that their kids were going to school out of state because they couldn’t get into UVA.

Yes. They both went to private in DC. They both applied to Georgetown and UVA as schools they might want to attend. They applied to these schools not knowing what their options would be. I encouraged them to apply to UVA and Georgetown even if they had no desire to attend these universities. However, they both wanted to attend a big OOS flagships for the big sports and big fun. My bad! First time trying the college admissions whirlwind this past year!

Maybe so, but the DB on page ONE had delivered his slap in the face before any of that, & even if 50 posters say their kid went OOS due to a UVA rejection, it doesn’t justify claiming ALL kids who went OOS got rejected by UVA. People even turn down Harvard & Stanford for goodness sake—is it so hard to believe someone might prefer another flagship to UVA?

This actually happens. I pretty much forced one if my kids to apply to 2 rural Ivies she had no interest in. The whole application process involves so many shifting variables, sometimes you have to force an issue you think makes sense even if kid disagrees at the time.

Another aspect of this story that rings true is that PSU & UT are schools that generate intense loyalty in people—even those with a 36 ACT. It’s easy to see a kid getting caught up in the collective enthusiasm at either place. If the schools were like U of Missouri and Arizona State, it wouldn’t be as believable.

Well, all I can say is if you spent all that money on private school and produced 2 kids with 36s who ended up at PSU and UT then you really threw your money away. Makes zero sense.

Except he offered that opinion without any snide comments or bashing anyone. And the fact is it’s true for many posters, as they admitted.
