Why are OOS flagships so popular these days?

I think the first shot fired is as early as page ONE:

“You are going to OOS public instead of in state UVA because you didn't get into UVA.“

The UVA fans might not realize it but their confidence in statements like this is nauseating. I mean who are you to make a statement like that? The 13th grade stuff (which I did not take part in & don’t agree with) came after repeated insults like this.

I’m not a UVA alum and I agree with it. Bang for the buck of UVA is huge. Wouldn’t turn that down for an OOS public.

Thus spoke a deity, who sees all and knows even more. How lucky we are to breathe the same air as he.

Well, we know he didn’t just apply to UVA, GT and PSU. We know there’s more of a story than that.

And we also know that very, very few kids are going to be accepted to those three schools alone and pick PSU.
Im the PP. Both kids had roughly the same GPA and both had 36 ACT scores.

It may be hard for you to believe, but my kids did not want to go to UVA or Georgetown. They both applied to 10 OOS flagships. Both were rejected from Michigan and UNC. Among those schools they were accepted, Texas and PSU were their favorites.

Not wanting to attend Georgetown is easy to believe. But applying when you don't want to attend makes no sense. It's not a quick or easy app.

Did they go to private school in DC?

Yes. They both went to private in DC. They both applied to Georgetown and UVA as schools they might want to attend. They applied to these schools not knowing what their options would be. I encouraged them to apply to UVA and Georgetown even if they had no desire to attend these universities. However, they both wanted to attend a big OOS flagships for the big sports and big fun. My bad! First time trying the college admissions whirlwind this past year!

I’m sure you tell all your girlfriends that, but they don’t believe it any more than we do.

But here’s the thing: poster after poster admitted that their kids were going to school out of state because they couldn’t get into UVA.

Let’s look at cross admits.

UVA 82% Indiana 18%
UVA 80% UC Boulder 20%
UVA 75% Delaware 25%
UVA 72% Arizona 28%
UVA 67% Wisconsin 33%
UVA 65% UCSB 35%
UVA 64% Perdue 36%
UVA 63% UIUC 37%
UVA 57% UT Austin 43%
UVA 54% GA Tech 46%
UVA 46% UCLA 54%
UVA 43% Michigan 57%
UVA 40% Berkeley 60%

Plenty of kids who get into UVA are choosing other flagships. Even for lower ranked schools it’s at least 1 out of 5 kids.

Maybe so, but the DB on page ONE had delivered his slap in the face before any of that, & even if 50 posters say their kid went OOS due to a UVA rejection, it doesn’t justify claiming ALL kids who went OOS got rejected by UVA. People even turn down Harvard & Stanford for goodness sake—is it so hard to believe someone might prefer another flagship to UVA?

Except he offered that opinion without any snide comments or bashing anyone. And the fact is it’s true for many posters, as they admitted.

Except…it’s not true. Many kids choose other flagships.

Would much rather be at UT-Austin than UVA.

It’s not BS. Many kids want to have a different experience OOS.

They get to go away from home to explore a new life. They get to avoid local state schools everyone and their cousin goes to. If they can't attend top privates they want, OSS comes as a consolation prize.

Do we know those were all Virginia kids not picking UVA?

“i’m not a UVA alum and I agree with it. Bang for the buck of UVA is huge. Wouldn’t turn that down for an OOS public.“

First, if you can get in UVA you’re probably in a position to get some serious merit aid at many OOS flagships. Second, not everyone makes affordability &/or USNews rankings their only 2 criteria, which a lot of people here seem completely unable to grasp. Maybe they want better engineering; maybe they want a direct admit to biz school; maybe they hate red brick. When you take your family out to a restaurant, do you all order the same thing?Third, if the abrasive UVA fans here are any indication of who goes there, I’m surprised anybody wants to attend. And I’m trying very hard to be conciliatory.

“UVA 64% Perdue 36%”

This should be much more favorable towards UVA. I mean I love chicken, but wouldn’t attend school with them.

Most of those schools are very good. And students may be in state for them. PSU is not a good school.

Useless data unless you know these are all in-state admits (which you obviously don't)

Living in Virginia makes my kid NOT want to attend UVA. It sure how you convince your kids to do it.

It’s not for everybody, but many students like the traditional college experience.

+100

Absolutely agree. They want the big school, big sports experience - it's not because the towns of the OOS flagships are so great in comparison to their home cities.

I don’t think the towns even necessarily need to be “better”. Just being somewhere different is fun.

I agree. We have twins that wanted totally different experiences than Wash DC offers (coming from private schools). They do want the bid school experience , big sports included. One is going to the University of Texas. The other is going to PSU. Vastly different schools in some ways. To each their own. We live in DC proper, and both kids said they would never stay in DC for school or even Virginia. They both were accepted to Georgetown and UVA but wanted to attend college farther away from home. I'm excited for them. Who know's how it turns out.

The Georgetown app is a total PITA. Why go through that if you "would never stay in DC for school"?

Yeah, count me as another skeptic.

If money is not a consideration - several oos flagships offer far better education and outcomes. especially in stem related fields eg

ut austin
any of the u cals
illinois
wisconsin
