Stop nut free classrooms. 90% of kids do NOT have FA’s!

Agree. Public schools would be so much better without all the catering to the IEP’s and 504’s. Pretty soon those kids and poor kids will be all that are left in the publics because everyone else will have left.

Oh puhleeze … our DD had an IEP and is now doing a PhD in a rarefied stem field … her BF had an IEP and now works for NASA. Many many students with IEPs are truly brilliant (gifted talented with learning differences) … if they get the supports they need when they are young, they usually have a lot to contribute to society. If they don’t, they are much more prone to being life long burdens on either their families or the state. It is a win win for them and society to help them to flourish.

But why should the taxpayer have to pay for your kid's special education?

Well it is the law - The IDEA Act was passed in the 1970s.

Many teaching strategies used to help students with LDs represent best practices for neuro typical children as well.

However, in our case we moved her to a private therapeutic then to a mainstream private that execute IEPS but with much less bureaucracy and more common sense.

However, it is in society’s interests to help students with LDs to succeed as otherwise they are much higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse/ mental illness and squandering their many talents.

Is your DD on the spectrum? Many people who do well in science are .

Among several other LDs, yes.

But apart from being very logical, she was athletic, kind, and empathetic - as well as awkward, clumsy and lacking confidence in herself. We did a lot of therapies when she was young to ameliorate the sensory sensitivities and a lot of play dates and sports to help build team spirit and social confidence. She was terrible at sports when younger and the last picked for teams. But we emphasized the value of participation and progress over winning. She eventually went onto to win at national levels but we cared that she was out there doing her best and feeling the joy of being part of a team working hard together to be their best.

She is not unique. Many kids and teens with LDs have so much to offer. When they get the supports they need, they bloom.

This. My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimers after having an infection. Infection cleared up, brain cleared up. But he was forever after considered an Alzheimers patient.

Yep! I think there is too much money to be made and no way to verify condition, so it gets diagnosed way more frequently that needed.

You are far to intelligent and informed to be arguing with the PPs. It's a wonder they actually made it through public school.

This thread was fun for a while, but now some crazy millennial, single, childless, cat lady has come on here to bash us all.

I don't think "neurotypical" is real. I think ADHD and autism are real, but I don't think people without either diagnosis are all the same and the "opposite". I have a lot of adult friends with ADHD who like to share memes or go on rants about how "neurotypicals" can't understand how hard it can be to focus on a boring task, but can't possibly have the amazing experience of hyperfocus when interested, or express creativity. And they seem to think there is some instinctual key to non-awkward, never-misunderstood communication all neurotypical people automatically understand. I wish! Life isn't that simple. People don't all fit into neat boxes. (Is it possible I have undiagnosed ADHD that didn't really cause any problems until I became a working parent? Maybe. Is it possible a lot of people struggle with some of this stuff, and share some of these strengths? Maybe!)

I think more people should make housing choices around minimizing car use. Yes, that means less space. It's an emergency.

I think people whose professional level, six figures jobs can be "completed" in well under 40 hours a week should not get paid so much.

That isn't just controversial, it's so ignorant. I have ADHD. Damn, I wished I had been diagnosed in my youth and gotten proper treatment. My life is night/day with treatment.

Guess I’m a bad parent then bc I’ve got two with ADHD! Lol

You cannot be serious.
I got into fights all through grade school and only a couple in high school. No teachers intervened and no police were called. No one was permanently harmed. It's how we settled things back in the day. Argue with another boy, and a fight for after school, sometimes during school was instantly arranged and you better show up. It really was no big deal.

The problem that you din’t seem aware of is that “the way things were” led directly to the way things are today. It’s the same mentality but just pushed to another limit each generation.

Taking prayer out of school has led us to where we are today!

Yeah, because everyone who ever prayed for something got what they asked for.

The rest were just Godless losers.
