Karl Frisch and the Stupidity of Dunn Loring ES

A lot of it will likely be existing schools like Spring Hill, either expanding its capacity (vertically?) and/or moving some of the kids farther north to Churchill Road to free up capacity at Spring Hill, etc... or possibly Westgate (again, only place to really grow that site is upwards, there's no real footprint available).

Or, maybe there's a new site somewhere else within a mile where the county already has land available that is appropriate size for an ES, even if the location isn't quite perfect, but at least is within very short bussing distance from the heart of Tysons. Nothing comes to mind though.

BASIS McLean is failing, maybe they can take over its office building?

It is right across the street, right?

That way they can keep the outdoor space.

What a shit show in the making.

Maybe they will just close Stenwood. It’s kind of a dump but the land might be worth something.

Building a new elementary school near Stenwood, Cunningham Park, Vienna, and Freedom Hill ES is like building a new high school near Lewis. Frisch is such a dodo, lucky for him it's just a bunch of other dodos to sign off on such stupidity.

Dunn Loring ES on the fast track:

https://www.gazetteleader.com/fairfax/news/fairfax-officials-fast-track-prep-work-for-dunn-loring-elementary-8291413

Supervisor Dalia Palchik (D-Providence) requested the expedited processing.

Can someone explain to me why Fairfax County proposes to build new schools before they determine what the school boundaries will be?

When FCPS has built new schools in the past, construction typically is well underway before they determine the new boundaries. What's atypical here is that there's no need for this school; not a single school in the area around Dunn Loring is projected to be overcrowded. They are merely building it because Frisch wanted to make sure a school wasn't built in the Blake Lane area and the best way to ensure that was to commit to building a school somewhere else. Because it's an unnecessary school in the wrong location, it will trigger considerably more boundary changes that would otherwise be needed. It is the biggest boondoggle in FCPS in decades.

Not many voters pay the slightest bit of attention to the School Board. Doesn’t mean he makes good decisions.

Some people paid big $$$ to make sure that happpened.

It’s obscene that FCPS is building this school given greater needs elsewhere. The incompetence within FCPS is just staggering.

He's one person. I think you are giving him too much credit by stating he is single-handedly responsible for a project of this magnitude. Also, it was voted on, and he was only vote.

It's his baby. Of course when you have 12 SB members from the same party, they rubber stamped it because the perception was he was just moving money around his own district.

Project chugging along:

Dear FCPS Families,
We invite you to attend a virtual Community Meeting on Monday, September 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., to learn about the latest updates on the Dunn Loring Capital Project.

At this meeting, we will:

Present the project's interim progress and design concepts.

Gather your valuable feedback on the project's direction and the design process.

Discuss potential adjustments that may be considered based on community input.

The repurposing of the Dunn Loring Administrative Center will create a new elementary school that will accommodate approximately 900 students. This project will not only provide a high-quality education for our children but will also alleviate overcrowding in ten other schools within the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system.

Language interpretation will be available.

We appreciate your continued interest in this important project and look forward to your participation.

Fairfax County Public Schools

The ten schools in question are Stenwood, Cunningham Park, Fairhill, Freedom Hill, Shrevewood, Vienna, Lemon Road, Timber Lane, Westbriar, and Westgate.

Are any of those schools even overcrowded? I don't think so.
