Elementary Schools In Capitol Hill

To me, coming from a rural/suburban background, Maury looks pretty diverse. But I also notice that whatever race the families are, they're mostly rich. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do about it. I'm follow discussions about race issues and try to learn more. I just wanted a good school for my kid, and I'm happy with it. I figure others in the neighborhood are similar.

+1. Exact same story as you. Maury is 60% white and given the place I grew up I feel like 40% non-white is...not exactly non-diverse?

Dunno. I went to school in Fairfax County and my school was less white than that. And for DC, only janney, Lafayette, Key, Mann and Stoddert have a higher percentage of whites kids, including charters. This is not exactly the forefront of diversity in DC schools.

OK, so what do you suggest? The Cap Hill schools are neighborhood, in-bound schools, so they reflect the neighborhood.

Not patting yourself on the back for having your kids attend a diverse school when they go to Maury or Brent.

DP. That only happened due to someone accusing parents of being racist for attending a 60% white school.

This is too ridiculous. Go pat yourself on the back, obviously you chose your home based on 40% white vs 60% white?? Really? I didn't even know the racial demographics for the Hill schools until about 15 mins ago I assumed they were all about the same. Diverse, compared to the 85% white place where I grew up. I chose city living 20+ years ago. I am not trying to be in a white enclave, and I am not.

Do Maury and Brent parents seriously not see a problem with their kids attending majority white schools in a city that is majority-minority? I always wonder this about SWS too. It’s not that I don’t understand that it’s no individual parent’s “fault” that this is the case, but… doesn’t it bother you? Of course we all want our kids to get a good education, but one question I’d ask myself is what we are teaching our kids when we tell them the best schools are the whitest schools. Do you not think they pick up in this stuff? Trust me: by MS they know exactly what the score is. That’s part of the education you are giving them too.

I am so confused about what you want white people to do? We are to carefully spread ourselves around to all the public schools so that the exact demographics of the city are reflected in each school? We are to value the number of black vs. white children in the school above any metric of actual education? What does THAT teach our children about race—that they are somehow NEEDED in schools? The white savior complex is extremely toxic and, believe me, most of these majority black schools DON’T WANT YOU!

You are so full of it.

Apparently the Hill is 54% white, vs the city overall is 42% white. So Maury/Brent at 60% white is representative of the population in the neighborhood. Then move on to, these are the richest neighborhoods. Then move onto ... what? How are we supposed to make this utopia?

The amount of nice white parents on this thread trying different ways to justify their choices is really just amazing.

The United States is 72% white.

My (white) kid came home from Watkins asking why it was mostly black kids with behavior problems. (My answer: because they are more likely to have difficult home life and perhaps teachers were tougher one them.) It's not like going to a diverse school will hide societal inequities from them.

I send my kid to Maury because it’s our inbound school. No, I don’t see a problem with it. I’m happy for DCPS to consider things like OOB at risk seats etc. I’m not worried I’m teaching my kid to be racist by sending them to a school with 40% POC and most of his teachers/admins have been Black.
