Elementary Schools In Capitol Hill

Anonymous
We're moving to Capitol Hill and have a child that would start kindergarten in fall 2022. I'm looking for feedback on the public elementary schools in that neighborhood. Thank you!

I think the best elementaries are Maury, Brent. I hear good things about Ludlow-Taylor, Van Ness and Payne. Some well regarded charter schools you have to lottery into: School Within a School, 2 Rivers. Look at myschooldc.org to get a look at all the schools.

I forgot to include Watkins.

Just to clarify. School Within a School is not a charter. It is a magnet Reggio Emilia program within DCPS.

Brent, Maury, Ludlow-Taylor, Peabody/Watkins, J.O Wilson, Van Ness. In that order IMO

Brent, Maury and Ludlow Taylor are well regarded. I know a family that is happy at Tyler as well.

Brent, Maury and L-T are safe bets for in-bound schools. Everyone loves Peabody, but Watkins is more of a mixed bag. I personally know families happy at Tyler (especially the Spanish program) and Payne.

SWS is a beloved pure lottery school (the magnet description above is misleading; there's no magnet aspect in the traditional sense) run by DCPS that anyone in the city has an equal chance at (setting aside sibling preference); it is physically located on the Hill.

I think Brent has the highest cost real estate, followed by Maury and Ludlow-Taylor.

L-T's real estate costs more on average than Maury's, because of how far east the Maury zone goes.

Brent or Maury.

Yes, Maury was rezoned a couple of years ago and the catchment now goes further east. So you can find some properties in the east end of the zone that are cheaper (it's also a less desirable area than the west part of the zone or the LT zone, hence cheaper)

Very few of these schools take any PreK students from out of bounds. Most waitlist at least some inbounds kids who don't have siblings enrolled. So if you already know where you're moving, find out the inbounds school for it and that's your best chance--you can also apply to schools that don't have boundaries like Appletree, Two Rivers, Capitol Hill Montessori, SWS, etc. and to schools that are more likely to take out-of-bounds PK students like Browne, Miner, and Walker-Thomas.

If you don't know where you're moving, I'd look in-bounds for Brent, Maury, Ludlow-Taylor, Peabody, Van Ness, JO Wilson, Tyler in roughly that order. Tyler higher if you want bilingual school. L-T, Peabody, and JOW if you want rights to Stuart-Hobson for middle school, but I don't think it's much better than the middle school where Brent, Van Ness, and Tyler go and things may change over the next decade anyway.

Sorry, I missed that you are starting with K! Your inbound school will have to take you. There will be very few spots out of bounds and you shouldn't count on getting one. You can lottery for them and for charters and city-wide schools.

Maury is considered the better school but I prefer the walkability of LT. Stanton Park, union station, h street, union market.

Yes--Maury is our next door neighbor and we've been advised by the other parents on the block that our chance of getting our son into pre-K there (without an older sibling) is verrrrry low.
