Washington, (State of Columbia) would work. They could even keep the DC postal code (like airport codes, they don't have to match anything), or change the postal code abbreviation to WC. |
If they want to be a state then they should grow up and be a state and take the name of the city out of the name. "State of Columbia" if fine. They should just go with that and call it a day. Washington, SC is then the city of Washington in the State of Columbia. If they cannot be adult enough about the name to take it sufficiently seriously, then why should anyone else take statehood seriously? |
Damn you, Poe's Law. |
Shouldn’t the federal district retain the postal code for DC? Are we really going to call it “The Capital”? |
| The statehood bill would transfer the costs of administering the courts, the increased Medicaid payment, and TAG when the new state certifies it can pay for those programs three or so years in a row. If the new state never certifies that it can pay, costs would not transfer. Republicans would stop those payments when they are in power so it’s in the new state’s interest to fund those programs without federal help. |
| Has there been an objective analysis on the impact statehood would have on resident tax bills? |
The lengthy explanation confirms that the name is overly complex and dumb. Then again, perhaps that's fitting for DC... |
Why was D.C. not conceived as a state in the first place? Centuries have gone by and no one thought of changing it to a state before? Why? |
There have been lots of attempts at DC statehood, this is by no means the first one. https://dcist.com/story/11/02/12/smooth-sailing-for-dc-voting-rights/ |
Columbia is a non-starter. We will not give further honor to a greedy racist who brought nothing but death and destruction to the New World |
New official name: State of Douglass Commonwealth. |
| Just call it The Douglass Commonwealth. |
So everyone will just call it “Douglass”? Because no one says I’m going to the “Commonwealth of Virginia” or “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”. |
And most folks will misspell Douglass.
|
| I call it our Nation’s Capital. |
