New Car Negotiation

Anonymous
PP here again.

Some negotiating tips:

- Hold the line on price. Don't negotiate against yourself. Go in with your best offer and don't budge from it. Worst case you can't get to a deal and you walk away. You can always come back a different day. Dealers still pull the "let them drive off and call them back" trick, so don't be afraid of leaving. You are not there to make a friend, so don't feel embarrassed.

- Don't get drawn into an argument with the salesperson or the sales manager or the "general manager" about anything relating to the car itself, or features, or protection packages, accessories, etc. Just say the car meets your needs and you don't want anything else. You are not interested in any other trim levels or variations. This is the car you want. If you can't buy this car at this price, you will have to go home and do more research. Repeat this same few lines if you have to. Don't argue about the car, keep the focus on the price.

- You don't have to justify your offer with calculations. Just say you did your research and see that there are other people who are getting this level of discount so this is what you want to pay. Tell them that if they can't do this price, you understand, and you will try with a different dealer. If no dealer will sell at this price, you will then increase the offer at that time. But for now, this is the price you want to pay.

Don't negotiate against yourself.

For Mercedes, I would shoot for 12-13 percent. You will have to be patient and get turned away a few times. But it's possible. Mercedes happens to be my favorite brand right now. That's the dealership I was sitting in two days ago.

Thanks for replying on this. I really want a Kia Telluride Night Fall, but those are going for 10-15k above MSP and hard to get. I’m a actually settling for the Mercedes.

What are your thoughts on a Honda Odyssey? Thank you!

The 2022's are out, so the 2021s are a little easier to negotiate on if you find any left on the lots. Push for 13% off on a 2021 and 11% off on a 2022.

Haha! Yea, KIA/Hyundai is doing good things with their car designs as of late. They are really blooming like the Japanese brands were in the 80s and 90s. The Telluride is a heck of a car. Not sure I would call it a step down to get into a GLE, but I definitely find the Telluride to be an exceptionally well-designed and built vehicle.
