New Car Negotiation

Anonymous
My husband and I are buying a new car for the first time in decades (we've mostly purchased from Carmax in the past). We're not buying anything fancy (think Accord or Camry) and aren't interested in any special packages. We're using TrueCar, which is quoting us about $2k less than the MSRP. I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas on whether this is as good a deal as we're going to get (particularly given that inventory seems to be low) or if you have any recommendations for how to get a lower price. Thanks.

MSRP is a made up number. Get their invoice price and shoot for 2% above that.

We got a quote from one dealer and then shopped around to see who could beat it.. Wound up paying about $3K less.

Find a few similar cars at area dealerships, email those dealerships, and ask for a price. I did this on my way out the door to purchase a car at the Costco price, and had a quote for about one thousand below that price in my inbox when I arrived at the dealer, which they then matched.

Yes to something like this. But be sure to match car features line item by line item. That's where the dealerships recoup some of their $ if they're trying to match a price.

Invoice is a fake number too now that manufactures give so many incentives to dealers

Buy through Costco. Hassle free and great prices.

Just be aware that you are buying in a car shortage (that is related to a computer chip shortage). I am kicking myself for not having done it in late December--I probably could have shaved a few thousand off of what I paid.

Remember you can also negotiate your extended warranty - get a price online and ask the dealer to match it

Make and model you are interested in and I will tell you the discount to shoot for. Typing this as I sit in a dealership completing my latest deal.

Not the OP, but:
Toyota Rav 4 hybrid or a Subaru Forester.

I don't think you are going to get any deal on the Rav4 hybrid. They are selling them left and right... and tacking on a fee above the MSPR.

RAV4 hybrid goes for above msrp

This. You don't have much leverage right now.
